Outstanding Russian artist, painter, draftsman, worked in the field of book illustration and theatrical scenery, made sketches of mosaic panels and architectural drawings. Born in with. Lopyal Vyatka province of Russia in the family priest. Education received at first in Vyatka religious school, then - in the seminary. In 1867 he moved to St. Petersburg and began training at the School of Drawing TPC (in I. Kramskoi). In 1868 - 1875 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and P. Basin Vereshchagin. Member and exhibitor TPHV (from 1878), SRS (1903), exhibited works in many art exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Moscow, London, Paris, Rome, etc. In the early stage (1870) the artist's paintings dominated household, later the main focus is epic-historical picture. Since the early 1880s, began to seriously pursue painting and religious iconography. At the invitation of Professor A. Prahova created murals Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev, which was awarded the title of professor of painting. After 1917, continued to work on the popular fairy tale themes. Full Member of the Academy of Arts (1893), Honorary Member of the Academy of Reims (1895) and many Russian art association, awarded the Legion of Honor (1902).
