Simply we artists (who are generally obtained) sharply divided between those who successfully made a career at home and those who are "on leave". Moreover, with few exceptions, can clearly be age line. Interesting. Both in terms of psychology, as well as who is looking for its place in art. But not fully understand why.
I think a few reasons:

1. Age. But not in the sense that the body is worn out or emotional burnout occurred. Stairs in the local hierarchy is chosen (and with a very large percentage of objectivity) is still in the "honest times." Especially if the region economically and culturally strong enough and the artist does not feel it full of ass province.
In those times, the most honest of these young artists, especially in general any cultural isolation was not inside the country, as a minimum. Grand Prix All-Union competitions are obtained, and Brno and Venice too. That is vanity quenched in a timely manner.
2. Subjects. For example a man writes a local urban landscapes, and with success.
3. Individual psychological characteristics. Just hate to go (I'm so ).
4. It was so nice and smoothly goes to the local market, that does not have time to make a "surplus" (may depend, for example, from a priori time-consuming and laborious techniques manners).
5. The style and genre, technique.
For example - more mobile graphics artists - because it is easier to carry. But the ceiling price for it exists. At the local market can sometimes earn more.
Realist landscape painters generally good (academic approach), but nothing outstanding, not memorable, in my opinion we have in Yekaterinburg - more expensive than in Europe and even cheaper than in Moscow. Due to their abundance in the capitals. And the lack of quality landscape in the province.
And just mediocre пейзажики in Europe in general for the art does not hold.

Usually causes a few of the list and some more.

Prior to the restructuring of Sverdlovsk was closed to foreigners the city. Yes, and from the Soviet Union released you know how.
For foreigners - but very private.
But strangely - here in the seventies, the Japanese broke through and ran the studio, especially catching watercolors (as exported do not know).

And they go, it turns out, went very much - and Around the World with Egypt, Morocco and Turkey, and many in Europe and even China and Korea. And the country just up and down to the last bump.
In Italy, even lived (winners of the metropolitan competitions) for several months.
All this, of course with eerie permissive system, several "farewell" to the KGB, and lots of instructions.
But gone. Today many have not.
