Indeed one can say differently. Is the point?

Not only not equivalent, but even by the etymology in different directions. "Loop" involves adherence to the original, ie smoothing variations, "variant" also requires the accentuation of some particular differences.
I've seen cases where the two are very similar in composition version of the picture because of a slight variation of color evoked a completely different emotions - because the author in every picture solve different problems.
It happens that the imagination of the artist's painting is at once in several versions - all in their own good. Then the artist stands before a difficult, sometimes painful choices - give birth to only one of them, or allow to be born and others.
