Vatagin, Vasily (1883/1884-1969), Russian painter, sculptor, painter of animals, representative of the symbolism. Born in Moscow on December 20, 1883 (January 1, 1884) in the family high school teacher. Studied in a natural branch of Moscow University (1902-1907), along the way visiting the studio, NA Martynova (since 1899) and KF Juon (1904-1906). He has also worked in the studio KF Kapshteyna in Berlin (1910). Sculpture worked independently (from 1909). In 1903-1913 traveled to Western Europe, traveled to India and Ceylon. Been influenced by ancient Egyptian and ancient Indian culture. Traveled to the north of Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Far East, twice (in 1927 and 1961) wrote the outline in Askania Nova.

Perhaps the most favorite of his "heroes" were the monkey (Monkey's closet, 1908-1909, private collection, Moscow, two "heads Oranga, 1927, Tretyakov Gallery, all the work - tree). Successfully acted as a graphic (album of lithographs, India, 1922) and artist books (series of lithographs by R. Kipling's Mowgli, 1926).

Along with the literary works of the animals (the texts of the same Kipling, as well as Leo Tolstoy, Dzh.Londona, E.Seton-Thompson) has illustrated numerous scientific publications. From his "natural sciences" things (all his life he felt as if in a borderland between art and zoology, which provided, however, a certain independence), the most significant paintings, written in 1930-1950's to Darwin and the Zoological Museum, the best of them are completely self-sufficient art panels in the Art Nouveau style. He has designed the entrances to the Moscow Zoo (1931-1932; not preserved, dismantled in the restructuring of the 1980's). Since 1919, worked hard and as a teacher - in the Higher Artistic-Technical Workshops (Higher Art School) and other institutions. In 1957 published an educational sketch book image of the animal.
