After graduation, earned a living as an artist, books, posters, and a master promgrafiki (design logos). However, all these kinds of art, especially promgrafika, does not have for him only some incidental "hack". As from 1966 the main artist SHKB Legprom (Special Arts and Design Bureau of Light Industry), he even brought to life an entire "school Schwartzman, who played an important role in implementing the principles of graphical styling (ie, symbolic and stylistic harmonization of industrial products).
In the same "ottepelno-stagnant" period in the late 1950's - 1960's, was formed and his machine-style, not adjacent to any of the typical lines of the then "other art". The artist created a huge - covering the whole of his mature creative life - painting and graphic cycles of so-called "ieratur" (his own term, produced from the Greek hieros, «sacred"). Hermetically-closed by composition, reminiscent of ancient totems and magic altars, sometimes equipped by some mysterious characters, these canvases and sheets of connected devices in a vanguard - cubism and surrealism - with archaic religious semantics. Ritual magic here as it has become a ritual art, closed in a decorative spectacle frames paintings.
The master's works included in the most significant collection of the Russian avant-garde and "unofficial" art, including the collection of GD Kostaki and a collection of N. Dodge, now included in the Zimmerly Museum (Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA). Landmark exhibition, crowned his career, was a big solo exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery (1994).

M. Shvartsman - one of the few masters of the twentieth century whose work was a milestone on the path to a new language of art. His artistic and philosophical system, called the author of "Ieratizm, embodied with equal force in painting and graphics. The artist came to the original style, which has no direct analogues. His art is built on the interpretation of the sign as an image, drawn to the complex philosophical and religious aspects of life. As a rule, on canvas Schwartzman appears aimless picturesque structure, within which there is a peculiar, furtive life forms, revealing the metamorphosis of life of the universe. Artist treated with maximalist insistence to craft the quality of their work. Each of the "ieratur wizard distinguishes high spiritual concentration.
