Painter Corneliu Baba

With the submission of a friend who came to podfak the Surikov School , discovered the Romanian painter - Corneliu Baba .

BIOGRAPHY
He studied first under his father , the painter George Baba , then briefly at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Bucharest , but not graduated . The first exhibition was held in 1934 in the town of Baile Herculane , which gave him the opportunity to continue their studies at the Fine Arts School in Iasi ( 1934-38 ) at the Nicholas Tonitsy . In 1939 he was accepted to teach in the same department as an assistant, in 1946 professor. In 1948 , after its debut at the show in Bucharest , was arrested , imprisoned in Iasi , the next year without explanation dismissed and sent to Bucharest. Despite the difficult relations with the communist government of Romania, who considered him a formalist , he managed to make a career as a book illustrator and artist . In 1955, he was allowed to travel to the Soviet Union in the same year he won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Warsaw. In 1956, three of his paintings were exhibited at the Venice Biennale .

In 1958, Corneliu Baba was appointed Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts Nicolae Grigorescu in Bucharest. Every year, he participated in exhibitions around the world. In 1964 he organized his wish personal exhibition in Brussels in 1970 in New York. Since 1963, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences . Nevertheless , although he was extremely famous in Romania and , to a lesser extent, in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe, he never managed to achieve comparable fame in the West.

CREATIVITY
He worked in the tradition of realism, dating back to the techniques of the old masters. However, in his work markedly influence of Expressionism , Art Nouveau and even Impressionism. The artist felt that it had a particularly strong influence of El Greco, Rembrandt and Goya. Since its creation, especially early , do not fit into the framework of the official socialist realism , the authorities constantly criticized him for formalism .

Almost all the works of Corneliu Baba are in Romania , distributed in all art museums of the country. These are portraits , still lifes, landscapes painted a broad thick brushstrokes .
