The outstanding Russian painter, genre painter. Born in with. Shitik Belsky district, Smolensk province. In 1882 - 1883 he studied at the icon-painting workshop at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. In 1884 he entered the MUZHVZ, where he studied with V. Polenov, B. and J. Makovsky Pryanishnikov. In 1889 he received a large silver medal and the title of the class artist. In 1890, undertook a mission to Constantinople and Mount Athos. In 1894 - 1895 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under Ilya Repin, then - in the Paris studio of F. Cormon and F. Colarossi. He lived and worked in St. Petersburg. Since 1890 participated exhibitions TPHV (member T-va from 1895), MTLM, Petersburg t-va artists, international exhibitions in Paris, Rome, New York, Prague (1928, one project acquired the Paris National Gallery), Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, Belgrade. Held solo exhibitions in St. Petersburg (1921) and Latvia (1922 - 1940) In 1903, received the title of Academician in 1914 became a member of the Academy of Arts. Created many portraits of famous personalities of the time: the historian Mikhail Barsukov, teacher S. Raczynski, singer Chaliapin, Nicholas II, Prince F.
