Charles Le Corbusier
French architect and architectural theorist, painter, one of the most respected masters of modern architecture October 6, 1887 - August 27, 1965 Charles Le Corbusier (real name - Charles Edouard Jeanneret Gris) was born on October 6, 1887 in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. There he graduated from the School of the Arts. His first architectural project (house), under the guidance of a professional zodcheva, Jeanneret has taken in 17 years. With the money in the years 1907-1912 he made a study tour to Europe, where he studied traditional and modern architecture, was a learned skill in leading architects of the time - J. Hoffman, A. Perret and P. Behrens. These journeys were his university. Returning home, Jeanneret some time teaching at the School of the Arts, and in 1914 opened his first architectural studio. One of his very important projects of the period - "Dom-Ino" in which the architect had already expressed the new prospects of industrial and building a model of large-sized elements, which in those days was an innovation. In 1917, Jeanneret left Switzerland to settle permanently in Paris, where in later years it was done quite a few projects. Also in Paris, the architect met with such renowned artists as Braque, Picasso, Lipchitz, Ozanfan and others, under whose influence he actively took up painting. Together with Ozanfanom Jeanneret in 1920 began production of philosophical and artistic magazine "New Spirit", where he led the architectural section, signing the pseudonym "Le Corbusier". The magazine was first published his "Five starting points of modern architecture," which embodied not only in creating many of its buildings, but they are most often used in modern architecture. In 1922, Jeanneret was founded in Paris studio, where in later years actively engaged in the design, he became famous for his phrase "house - a machine for living." Now, Le Corbusier designed and built several buildings and modernist villas, created a name and a solid customer base. In addition he served as private and large orders - the design of buildings of the Salvation Army Center in Paris, the Ministry of Education in Rio de Janeiro, the Swiss pavilion in Paris, a building in Moscow, Central Union ... During the Second World War, Le Corbusier's workshop was closed, and he and his wife Yvonne moved to a suburb of Paris. After the liberation of France, he participated in the reconstruction efforts. In particular, he carried out plans for reconstruction of the Saint-Dieu and La Rochelle, which became the new original contribution to urban development. And his ideas and theories formed the basis for the "Athens Charter", adopted by IV International Congress of Modern Architecture (1945), and are still used. 1950 year was a new step in the career of Le Corbusier. He goes on austerity, now his hand is rich in forms of plastic, textured surface treatment. Among the famous buildings he created in this period - "Living unit" in Marseille (17-storey residential building, which became the prototype for mass construction in many countries), in the chapel Ronshane (France), the general plan of the city and the administrative buildings in Chandigarh (India ), the National Museum in Tokyo, the building of the UN headquarters in New York and Cultural Center at Harvard University (USA) and others. In addition to the architectural heritage, Le Corbusier left many works of art - paintings, sculptures, drawings, murals, sketches, rugs, furniture designs. He also the author of some 50 monographs and articles. The most famous of his works - "On Architecture", "Radiant City", "When the cathedrals were white" and others. Le Corbusier - one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, the pioneers of modern architecture. He was an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich, Cambridge, Columbia, Geneva, an honorary member of many Academies of Arts, was awarded the French Legion of Honor medals and other countries. He has trained such famous architects as Maekava, Collie, Fry, Sakakura, Candilis and many others. Charles Le Corbusier died August 27, 1965 in Rokbryuyn Cap Martin (France). |
