Mihai Munkácsy was born in 1844 in the town of Mukachevo (formerly the territory of Austria-Hungary, now Ukraine), real name Lieb (presumably Swabia, ie, German). Munkáchi, a pseudonym, which came later, when the artist was made an honorary resident of the city Mukachevo. He studied in Budapest, Munich and Dusseldorf, spent all his life in Paris, where he became famous. Pictures brought the artist fame "death row" and the triptych "Jesus before Pontius Pilate"
