Born to David Fedorovich Burliuk, a native of the peasants, who served as administrator of the estate in the south of Russia. The brother of the poet Nikolai Burliuk and artist Vladimir Burliuk. Original art education was led by his mother, Lyudmila Levinton Mikhnevich - artist-amateurs.

In 1898-1902 (with breaks) studied at the Kazan Art school, K.-G. L. Myufke and GP Medvedev, in 1899-1900 - in the Odessa Art School in KK Kostandi, GA Ladyzhenskaya, A. Popov.

After unsuccessful attempts to enter the IAH went to Munich. In 1902-1903 studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in B. Dietz, in 1904 he moved to Paris where he continued his education at the School of Cormon.
