By the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German auction house Jeschke-Van Vliet had bid socialist-realist painting.

Italian Collection of Russian and Ukrainian art sold in Germany ... This venture could become the most cosmopolitan auction of the year, but in fact proved to be one of the most bizarre and extremely unfortunate.

Trades with a loud "For the Iron Curtain. The Art of Socialist Realism "held on November 6 Berlin auction house Jeschke-Van Vliet. As expected the organizers of the auction of 140 lots (135 paintings and graphic works 5) had to offer € 2,6 million, but the grand total amounted to only € 387,500, and managed to sell only 31 lots.

It is known that exhibited at the auction the collection was assembled over the past five years, six collectors from Milan. Why did they suddenly decided to sell it right now, at such a sensitive art-market time, when demand declined significantly and the works of social realism, remains a mystery. Perhaps, it was expected that there will be additional advertising done by the noise in the press about the twenty-year fall of the Berlin Wall.

Good Bye, Lenin?
Generally, in past auctions Jeschke-Van Vliet had a lot of strange things. Let's start with what was originally announced show, moreover, is sufficiently large: 287 works, many of them - gigantic. Admission is free, each visitor gave out an impressive volume catalog. The confusion arises because of that destined for the auction of 140 items were not marked. At the pre-auction exhibition was not like - was planned, it will go another three weeks after the auction until 30 November.

However, the scale in this case does not guarantee quality. Mirjana Marichevich from Moscow gallery Maricevic Fine Art & Antiques Auction called "a really funny: Exposed lots - a professionally selected group of works of very dubious artistic quality. The level of all things exactly the same: custom daub! ". Among them are a lot of copies of works darlings "Soviet apparatchiks - Plastov, for example. In addition, many paintings were not signed, and "attributed" to a particular artist. Very little is known names, an exception was perhaps the only Yablonskaya, but not famous Tatiana Nilovna, author of the famous "Bread" from the Tretyakov Gallery, and her younger sister, Elena. However, both attributed to her work had not been sold.
What we wanted to prove.

Shl Taken from here (there are pictures there).
