At the time of Peter I (the beginning of XVIII century.) One painter was sent for study in Italy. Returning to Russia, he brought with him a copy of the Italian icon "Holy Family" painted by Raphael and left it at his cousin - the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Gryazeh. After his death, the priest placed the icon on the porch of the Temple.

It has been nearly forty years. In one of the pious woman's husband was slandered and exiled. As a consequence, the estate was selected by the treasury. Worst of all, her only son fell into the enemy prisoner.

Poor woman long appealed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help in these troubles. One day, while praying, she heard a voice: "Find the icon" The Holy Family "and pray in front of her! .." Martyr icon found on the porch of the Temple of the Holy Trinity on Gryazeh and prayed before it. And very soon she got three good news: her husband was acquitted, returned to the estate, and the favorite son returned from enemy captivity. It was after this icon and its name "The Three Joys".

Icon appreciate the Russian people, especially its worship on the Don and Kuban. It was believed that prayer in front of it helps to return home tipsy Cossacks.

Over time, there were lists of this image, made in the Russian icon-painting tradition. At the same time John the Baptist and Saint Joseph the righteous are depicted, usually on opposite sides of the Blessed Virgin.
