Among the outstanding artists represented in the exhibition appear Moldakhmetov Kenbaan and Kanaf Telzhanov using the techniques of realism for the transfer of the national spirit; Salihitdin Aytbaev, whose film "Happiness" became a kind of manifesto of artistic ideas of the 1960's and many others. Of great importance in the formation of the museum's collection had a practice of interaction with the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Museum of Fine Arts named after A. Pushkin, the State Hermitage and the State Russian Museum. As a result of cultural exchanges and unexpected gifts in the museum collections were "objective Composition" by Olga Rozanova, "Still Life" Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Pavel Filonov drawings. Until now, access to wealth collection was closed to the international audience. По умолчанию From Kazakhstan with Love

[I] In the first week of September in the exhibition hall of the auction house Christie `s in London, an exhibition of Treasures of Kazakhstan, which showcased selected works of Russian and Kazakh artists from the State Arts Museum named after the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasteev and from the private collection of Nurlan Smagulova. In: Russian inherent suspicion. Russian who worked in the former Soviet Central Asian republic.
O: Oh, no, of course, this project is absolutely charity. Just now I am often in Kazakhstan: I have a wife - Kazakh, and there I go to see my new family. Great impression on me in Alma-Ata Art Museum Kasteev. I thought: why not show the number of selected works from the museum in London. But the first is the art of the former Soviet Central Asian (sorry, now the Central Asian) republics.
At Christie `s practice exists: from time to time, but usually in late summer, we make a non-profit exhibition. For example, we showed the painting and graphic arts graduate of one of the preferred UK schools - Harrow School. By the way, it studied, and Winston Churchill, the former very good watercolor, and many other prominent political figures of England, as well as artists. Then we collected their work in various museums.
So when I learned that the museum Kasteev closed for reconstruction, then went to the administration and offered to organize a visiting exhibit. With me agreed, but said that the need to arrange everything carefully and accurately. I found a sponsor - Nurlan Smagulova, President Astana Group, plus another company Oracle Capital Group. It may seem strange, but no commercial interest, I was not here and there, any dividends from this, I do not get it.
In: But maybe that was sort of family interest? After all, your wife - an art?
And then, unless an employee has an auction house may not be a hobby that he can do, using their professional experience and knowledge? This show I did, one can say for the soul, the love of art.
But now I began to get unexpected calls from other museums: why do not you show and our meeting?
In: you are happy or puzzling? These proposals from the same region - from the republics of Central Asia? Perhaps the museum in Nukus Savitsky?
O: No, not from Uzbekistan (for the albums I know about the excellent museum in Nukus) and generally not from Asia. However, it is still as if such muffled sounds.
Of the Baltic countries, from Ukraine, from Russia ...
O: Do not torment me. I will say this: from this space. But why I did this particular show? If you ask someone on the street in London, where Kazakhstan, you very few people say something definite. But this is a very big country with interesting culture. It seemed important to introduce the works of London, located in the Museum of the Alma-Ata, including the excellent work of Petrov-Vodkin, Corina, Filonov Konchalovsky, Volkova, Falk, Christmas, unique works of Rozanov and Redko ... As an expert in the field of Russian art (and I I work in Christie `s almost 25 years) I can say that the picture quality such as not every year can be seen on the pre-auction exhibitions.
In: You have listed the artists of the Russian School. But the exhibition consists of two parts: the museum's collection and private collections Nurlan Smagulova, where for the most part still works Kazakh artists.
O: But in another way to organize this exhibition? Show only Russian artists and skip the Kazakhs, or vice versa? So it does not, because some are connected with others. Do I have to tell you that many Kazakh artists studied in Moscow and Leningrad. For example, a collector Nurlan Smagulov everywhere looking for and collects the work of Saltzman and Kalmykov. The most interesting for me in the organization of the exhibition space to find the right chords among the works of artists. Not only to exhibit turned out beautiful, but she explained that the art world in this region. My wife opened her eyes to the art of Kazakhstan, and I wanted to open my eyes to it to those who come to us, in Christie `s on King Street.

Kasteevka visiting Christie »

Olga Vlasenko, a correspondent for "Expert Kazakhstan»

Christie's first introduced in the London exhibition of 50 paintings from Kazakhstan uzeya them. Kasteev and 25 works from a private collection

The exhibition, held in the main halls of the trading house near Piccadilly, lasted eight days. Having opened on September 1 in the off season, she prefaced the beginning of the autumn auctions. But, as has been refined by its organizers, none of the product, even from a private collection, will not be sold. The purpose of the exhibition - to acquaint European visitors with the Kazakh art. Its name is "Treasures of Kazakhstan" - a rather exotic and fabulous is the association of childhood with a cave of robbers or pirates island. His colleague came up with Christie's Emily James. It seemed appropriate to the organizers, as masterpieces of the Kazakh and Russian art are located in Almaty, and few people know about them. The paradox in the fact that the treasures were not diamonds and gold, not even oil, glorified our country, and works of fine art, which began to develop by historical standards in Kazakhstan, most recently, in the thirties of the twentieth century, and has not yet century. As curator of the exhibition told Meruert Kaliyeva, 80 years ago in Kazakhstan was easel painting. But she began to take shape under the influence of Russian and Soviet schools - Cubism and social realism. First began to paint Abilhan Kasteev that was completely new to the Kazakh mentality, accustomed to express themselves in the applied arts.

experimenting "backwoods»

According to art critic Kasteevki Elizabeth Kim, with the advent of Soviet power and the separation of religion from the state in Kazakhstan began to develop the fine arts. Government's decision to Alma-Ata of the central museums of Moscow and Leningrad gave some pieces to create their own museum. Of course, this was not the most famous work, no museum would not agree to give them up. For many years, the museum director was Love Plakhotnaya, collector, patriot, attended the backbone of the collection. Many works were sold and transferred Kasteevke because their owners were confident that they will be included in the permanent exhibition, and will not gather dust in the vaults of the central museums. In the 50-60-ies of many avant-garde artists in museums in Moscow and Leningrad are not exposed. It was banned. Alma-Ata at the periphery, where tight control of the Ministry of Culture was not. Plakhotnaya persuaded many artists and their families to sell the work of the museum. So we got to the work of Pavel Filonov. Museum sold works by artists of the terms "Jack of Diamonds" - Kuprin, Christmas, Konchalovsky. Their work is always exhibited in the museum. Critics of Moscow and St. Petersburg are surprised that the museum remained the only work of the early Konchalovsky, where he worked under van Gogh. Maturation, the artist has destroyed all the works of this period. The museum has several works by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939). Among them - "Still Life", bought from the owner of the art salon, where she first was exposed to the Black Square by Malevich, Hope Dobychina, evacuated to Alma-Ata at the beginning of World War II. Some of the Russian artists of the "formalism" and "commitment to the Western tradition," exiled to Kazakhstan, where many stayed to live and work: lay the beginning of the famous chashno-dome method Vladimir Sterligov Sergei Kalmykov and Paul Saltzman, who arrived in Alma-Ata, theater artists. Remoteness from the center not only allows local writers to experiment, but the museum's curators prefer avant-garde.

In Search of Identity

Visiting artists have painted, to comprehend what he saw ethnic identity. For example, the Russian artist Leontiev, who lived in Tashkent and Alma-Ata, in the film "On the collective farm market" refers to the oriental motifs. For the Muscovite market - it's exotic. And to Tashkent and Almaty people - this is everyday life. Thanks to the fine traditions of the Russian school of Kazakhstan were able to look at ourselves through the eyes of another. Influenced by avant-garde and Socialist Realism began to take shape the local language of painting, shape Kazakh identity.

The first works of Kazakh art entered the museum's collection by National Art Exhibition, 1935. The first wave of Kazakh art - the artists who were educated in central universities Union - Kanaf Telzhanov, Sabur Mambeev, Moldakhmetov Kemball. And the second - Salihitdin Aitbayev, Ivan Saveliev, who searched his national identity that distinguishes them from other republics of the artists - ornamental flowers, a large module, specific to Kazakh felt carpet - syrmakov and tekemetov. Sixties was a bold innovator, identify national style of art in Kazakhstan. The exhibition featured monumental canvases Moldakhmetov Kenbaeva (1925-1993 gg.) "Conversation" and Kanaf Telzhanova (b. 1927), "The earth geezers" and "kokpar. Kenbai Telzhanov and educated in Moscow and Leningrad, skillfully use techniques of realism for the transfer of the national spirit and by providing a transitional period before the emergence of the Kazakh-style 60's. Works from the private collection of Nurlan Smagulova complement the exhibition of masterpieces from the museum Kasteev. This picture Janat Shardenov (1927-1992), the work of contemporary artists Abdrashitov Sydyhanova and Kenzhebaya Duysenbaeva demonstrating how the search form and the spirit of national relevance to the present day.

The exhibition organizers have found a solution to the original exposition. It tells the Meruert, initially thought to arrange pictures in chronological order, but it turned out that this approach does not work: "We decided to hang Kazakh artists next to the Russian - to be easier to find parallels between them. Museums rarely do so - hang together landscapes or still lifes, they are usually divided into different schools. This is not a museum exhibit and we had more freedom to experiment. The exposition we have joined a private collection, which is nowhere else exhibited, and patterns of the museum's permanent exhibition Kasteev.

Continuation of fairy tales

Kazakh art market has not yet formed. Collectors are only interested in the works already become a classic of Soviet artist Sergei Kalmykov. What about contemporary artists not yet say. Although the modern art of Kazakhstan seemed at Christie's two years ago - Eraly Uspanov, Saule Suleimenov Kuanysh Bazargaliev and others. According Meruert, sold 13 works for 512,000 pounds, roughly a million dollars. But it was a charity auction for the disabled, and buyers - British businessmen. According to Elizabeth Kim, if the UK developed sponsorship of art, in Kazakhstan there is no: "If our museum appeals for support to our businesses, it has no strong impact. Christie's - the next level and name. And it went with great pleasure. " Museum Kasteev protects its funds, but did not replenish them so many opportunities. As told by its director Bakhyt Serail, if earlier, in Soviet times, purchasing a special state commission was engaged in and out of the budget to allocate funds for implementation of government orders, but now the museum are replenished mainly through gifts. In the crisis of money and does not stand out. The next year promises to finance purchase, and then the commission will look exhibitions, attend workshops, working with artists.

If we can find sponsors, then the show could be continued - the development and transformation of the tradition in the Soviet period, in the works of contemporary artists. "We hope that this exhibition will become a touchstone. It is important that the art of Kazakhstan was made. Next event could be a continuation of the 60's and 70's. Contemporary art - is represented here by earlier works Abdrashev Sydyhanov working today in a different style, Askar Esdauletov, Andrei Noda, Alma Menlibaeva, deceased student Sterligov, Rustam Halfin and others. All names at once and can not remember, but can be cut, which would be interesting for many "- believes Ms. Kim.

around art

The idea of the exhibition of paintings the museum owns Kasteev head of the Russian department of Christie's Alexei Tizengauzenu. Trading House took the lead in organizing the exhibition, including transportation, registration and publication of the catalog. This could become possible thanks to sponsorship Astana Group, Oracle Capital Group and Air Astana.

As usual, this kind of event - is not only a presentation of art, but also the communication that occurs around him - discussions, meetings, communication, formal and less formal events. Reception in the house Christie's has been very warm. After the press conference about the opening, which made the head of sales at Christie's, David Linley, Alex Tiesenhausen and Bakhyt Serail, they all went to reception suites. There's a less formal setting, surrounded by antiques, present raised their glasses of champagne for special occasion and enjoy delicious cuisine from the chef Christie's. Night at the opening of the exhibition has gathered more than 500 people - Kazakh and Russian diaspora in London, British journalists, collectors and clients to Christie's.

The four-day stay in London was intense. The program included not only visit the exhibition, but also familiarity with trading platforms Christie's, a master class in the auction, wine tasting with a specialist trading house. Journalists were able to meet and talk with the sponsors exhibitions: have a drink with Air Astana in the trendy Mexican pub dinner with Nurlan Smagulov at Tate Britain and dinner with the staff of Oracle Capital Group in an elite London club Mosimann's - but as part of an exciting program to visit Buckingham Palace and Tower, boat ride and a tour bus and visit to Baker Street, away from Sherlock Holmes.

Would like to see an exhibition of paintings that have become classics and of the national heritage, could contribute to the growth of interest in contemporary art of Kazakhstan as a homeland and abroad, and that eventually developed into symbolic capital to the financial and work of our contemporaries would leave the hammer as the Christie's and Sotheby's, and replenish the funds of museums and private collections in our country.
