Outstanding Russian artist, book illustrator and stage designer, a member of the "World of Art". Born in with. Tarhovka (near St. Petersburg). He graduated from the law faculty of St. Petersburg University. In 1898 he studied in the studio of the artist Aschbe in Munich, then under the direction of Repin in school workshop of Princess M. Tenisheva and was a volunteer at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. After a series of ethnographic expeditions became a connoisseur of the Russian North, the artist clearly showed his talent in the illustration to the Russian fairy tales and legends in the design magazines early XX century. After the October Revolution of 1917, he left Russia in 1920 and lived in Cairo and then to Alexandria. In 1925 he settled in Paris, where he was preparing brilliant scenery for performances of Russian operas. The invitation is for Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird" in Buenos Aires, and a number of operas in Brno and Prague. In 1935 - 1936 created a monumental mural "Mikula Selyaninovich" to the Soviet Embassy in Paris, and soon after that he returned to his homeland. Lived in Leningrad, he taught at the All-Russian Academy of Arts, continuing to work as an illustrator and artist of the theater. The works are in the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and many other museums in Russia and Europe.
