the rapid growth and the widest distribution. One could ask how and why this is happening. How to relate to the myth and the fact of fiction? What activates this century, people of the ability to myths? Need to fill it were used for one reason or another void in
their lives? Has the mass media, cultivating an interest in "celebrities" with
emphasis on intimate, and often just the dirty details? ..
Looking at the familiar features, we can see how they change, obedient trends
time: through the gloss of the ceremonial portrait suddenly emerges a caricature, and then
and an entirely different complexion. Image varies, the person escapes.

Take Lewis Carroll, mathematician and clergyman, author
two tales - "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass"
brought him worldwide fame.
Everyone knows that, say, Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Latvidzh [2]
Dodgson) was a shy, awkward and shy stutterer. We know that he
boring lectures, two words could not bind to the small talk, and only
among children suddenly became animated, and - a miracle! - Inventive and
gay storyteller. We know that he always wore a hat and gloves,
different stiffness and pedantry, he wrote many letters (mostly
children, of course) and embody all the Victorian virtues.
We also know that turning a crank in the dark fantasist and
storyteller contributed not just children, but only little girls.
To whom this wonderful storyteller felt - oh, horror! - Not paternalistic
interest. Abusing the trust of naive mothers, he attracted young companions in
risky for long walks, throwing their letters, and even
photographed in the nude!
In fact, we know not one person, but two - Lewis Carroll and
Latvidzha Charles Dodgson, and these two are almost opposites: Dodgson,
As can be seen, very cleverly fooled minded contemporaries, hiding their
true nature under the guise of respectable boring. But shrewd
descendants are struggling - Carroll sees double, not given in the hand:
"He walked through life in such a light step that left no traces" [3].
The remarkable thing is that we are talking about a man whose life was so
detailed and carefully documented ... After his death, left diaries
letters, memoirs of contemporaries. Including his once-young
friends, whom he called "my child-friends".
Let's try to understand the amazing metamorphosis kerrollovskogo
image.

Immediately after the death of Charles Dodgson, his nephew, the Reverend
Stuart Dodgson Collingwood, published a detailed biography of Carroll. She
Traditionally known as: "Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll", that the Russian
being translated as tradition: "Life and Works of Lewis Carroll, and
"Letters" here means all that came out of his pen, including
correspondence. Archive Latvidzha Charles Dodgson was enormous. All his life he, like
a typical Victorian, kept diaries, wrote many letters, bringing in
special register of all sent and received correspondence, composed
political and scientific treatises, poems and prose - in short, it is difficult even
imagine the amount of "paper" heritage, which remained in the possession
executors. Executors were two younger brothers, Carroll - Wilfred
and Edwin. It was after the death of Wilfred Carroll burned part of his personal papers --
possible, fulfilling the will of the deceased. (In correspondence with Anna Henderson, Wilfred
Dodgson mentions the envelopes, which contained personal notes and photographs
inscription "In the event of my death to destroy, not opening." It is possible that
writer left and other instructions.) After his death, Carroll's "room" in
Christ Church [4] (the so-called teachers' apartments, located in
most college), which he occupied for so many years, appropriate emergency
release. Huge archive Carroll pulled down in a hurry, some, as
mentioned, was burned, the rest seemed, was divided between
families, something subsequently lost.
Apparently, Collingwood during work on a biography of Carroll had
disposal of all his correspondence, diaries and register all correspondence:
biography provided with a plurality of quotations from these documents. A graduate of the same
Christ Church College, where he studied and later taught his uncle,
gentle and educated cleric Stuart Dodgson Collingwood created
idealized portrait of his illustrious relative. This first
biography, published in September 1898, ie after only seven months
after the death of Carroll, was the main documentary evidence, to
which guided all subsequent biographers. This is partly
that Carroll's letters and diaries were not available to subsequent
researchers in its entirety. But, of course, it's not just that.
XIX century created the myth of Carroll, the myth that was expensive
Victorian England - on the kindness and eccentricity, of the deep religiosity
and surprising humor, the strict and measured life, occasionally interrupted by
short "intelligent vacation" (GK Chesterton), during which
and were written tale about Alice and some other works. Collingwood
In his book leads the ringing contemporaries of Carroll. "I
remember the joy and our serious conversation, and how great and
valiantly he used humor to draw the attention of many
people, and his love for children, the simplicity of his heart, the care of servants, and his
spiritual care of them "[5], - writes one. Another remembers" the other side of his
nature, which is more interesting and more than deserves to be
remember about it than even his remarkable and charming humor - I am
referring to his deepest sympathy to all the suffering and the needy. Several times
came to me for mercy, and all my life I learned from him Preparedness
help people in trouble, his infinite generosity and infinite patience to
face of errors and follies. "A third noted that" she almost strange
simplicity, and sometimes without hypocrisy and touching childishness, which featured
it in all areas of thought, manifested in his love for children and their love for
him in his fear of causing pain to any living creature ...". In the preface
Collingwood succinctly anticipates these and many other similar memories
Carroll's contemporaries words: "Read it meant to love him."

After the death of brothers and sisters Carroll's papers went to the store
two unmarried nieces - Menello and Violet - and remained with them until
most of their deaths (Menello died in 1963, Violet - three years later). For
this time, many papers were lost (including four volumes of diaries), except
addition, some diary entries were cut with scissors. In 1953
carefully selected pieces of nieces diaries were published in two
volumes, edited by RL Green [6], which explains in his preface that the so -
as Collingwood has used when writing a biography of Carroll's diaries,
"there was no need to carefully preserve them - and they disappeared for many years,
with the rest of the surviving papers. Over time, they again
found in the basement, dropped out of a cardboard box turned out to be of thirteen
volumes lacks four ...".
Of course, the explanation sounds lack of credibility - and the traces of scissors in
diaries sufficiently eloquent. (In later years, Carroll's niece
confessed to the destruction of individual journal entries.) Published Samples
diaries does not violate the already established image of the ascetic scholar
eccentric, who lived a modest and quiet life ...
However, no matter how secretive loyal niece, XX century has already begun
create their own myths. After the Great War (the so-called English First
world) the image of Carroll began subtly to change. These were the years of "victorious
procession "of psychoanalysis, has spread rapidly in Europe, America, Russia
and even in conservative England. Even in a brief "Notes on the Humpty Dumpty"
published in 1921 in connection with a new translation of "Alice in Wonderland" on
German, JB Priestley voiced concerns about the prophetic
the fact that this book will soon "good thousand Teutons important" that
on the stage will be the inevitable Freud and Jung with his followers, and we
offer the monstrous volume of Sexualtheorie in "Alice in Wonderland," about
Assoziationsstudien Jabberwocky and the intimate sense of the conflict between
Trulyalya and Tralyalya with psychoanalytic and psychiatric point of view. "
In his essay, Priestley expresses one more assumption, which, alas,
not justified, however, he himself feared. "What's up to the Alice ... --
he writes - but not, Alice would be spared, and I, in any case, not going
disillusion pensive shadow of Lewis Carroll. Peace be upon him yet
bit in the dark about what was really going on in ALISIN
head, that - I may say so - especially Wonderland.
Alas, Alice is not spared. "Psychoanalytic and psychopathological"
interpretations with fervor began to engage in - and still do! --
not alone "Teutons". Priestley, has devoted so much
pages sentimental good old England, even in a nightmare could not
dream that they will write about Alice in this most British and other
English-speaking countries. Romantic attitude toward childhood and children, in which
earliest time of life was seen as the realm of innocence has been replaced completely
different views. The age of psychoanalysis, and Carroll's book, it seemed,
offers a very fertile ground for new-fashioned reasoning.
The starting point for psychoanalysts has already-established view of
ruthless categorically repeated in each study: "He did not
was adult friends. He liked girls and only girls. "These words
Paul Shildera, and they were taken from the "Psychoanalytic zametkok of Alice in
Wonderland and Lewis Carroll "(1938). Shilder sternly asks:" What was his
[Carroll's] attitude to their own genitals? "- And answers that
embodiment of the phallus is none other than myself Alice ... (Poor,
naive JB Priestley!) Tony Goldsmith, who, in fact, put
Home psychoanalytic interpretations of "Alice" - that in his writings
Carroll's love for children first acquired sinister - length
theorizes about the symbolism of doors and keys, noting that the object of special
interest is just a small door (that is, a girl, but not adult
woman). More - more. In Carroll's books everyone can find what
searching for: neuroses, psychoses, oral aggression, the Oedipus complex ... And of course,
needless to explain what actually rabbit hole ... ( "When I take
word, it means that I want, no more and no less, "- said
Humpty Dumpty scornfully.)
We will not delve further into these concepts: they have long navyazli

all in the teeth. In fairness it should be noted that the need for scandals
and sensations are not exhausted by mere sexual themes. Second
half of the twentieth century, now and then there were new interpretations kerrollovskoy "Alice".
It was found in "Wonderland" written by a special code citations from the Old
Testament, it turns out that this message of psychedelics, created under the influence
special hallucinogenic mushrooms (remember the fungus, which sat Blue
Caterpillar, consult Alice bite "on one side and on the other side"?).
Especially a lot of noise caused a theory according to which the author of "Alice" was
Queen Victoria herself! This was even during Soviet times, we wrote
national press and people were arguing in the university buffets.
After the publication of Nabokov's "Lolita" (1955), whose popularity with
Every year grew and grew, mass reader finally became clear
that Carroll, of course, was a pedophile. Now, finally, kerrollovsky euphemism
"child-friends" opened its true meaning: "nymphets"! With the new greed
reader looked into memoirs kerrollovskih "nymphets", trying to read
between the lines.
Now no serious scholar Carroll could not
ignore the damned question, as it is fond of Carroll Little
girls. And if the researcher did not want to recognize a pedophile and writer
pervert, he had to take a defensive position and build
system justification.
Sam Carroll thought his friendship with the girls completely innocent, we
there is no reason to doubt that the way it was. Also in
numerous memoirs, written after his little friend,
no hint of any impropriety. Today <...> Carroll
sometimes compared to Humbert Humbert, whose name is the narrative
in "Lolita" by Nabokov. Indeed, and both had a passion for
girls, but they pursued the opposite goal. In Humbert
Humbert "nymphets" aroused carnal desire. Carroll is why I was drawn to
girls that sexually he felt like with them in full
security. From other writers, in whose life was a sex scene (Toro,
Henry James), and from writers who worried about the girl (by Ernest
Dawson [7]), Carroll distinguishes it is a strange combination of utter
innocence and passion. The combination of unique in the history of literature "--
wrote Martin Gardner, author of "The Annotated Alice" [8].
"Lewis Carroll ever fight with the devil - and, as we know, for
Victorians sex was often the mask of the devil. I am convinced that Carroll went
winner of these battles. <...> At heart, Carroll was aware that
if he ever relinquish the slightest temptation to friendship with the children, never
not be able to renew that friendship. He was a kind of Victorian fisherman
Catcher in the Rye, but he was not Humbert Humbert "[9], - says another
known scholar Carroll, Morton Cohen.
But no matter how noble minds, some have tried to protect the eccentric
storyteller, the residents can not take his eyes off the macabre fascination
pictures: a child alone with the insidious tempter, whose pockets are stuffed with
toys, but in my head roam impure thoughts. This sight terrified respectable
the audience almost to the end of the twentieth century ...
Meanwhile, after the death of Menello and Violet kept diaries
Lewis Carroll still sold heirs to the British Museum.
Once trapped behind the seven locks cherished sheets are available for
study. But - nothing happened. A lab-notebook in gray covers already
nobody was interested. Carroll's biographers and scholars have continued
rely on the usual facts and come to a familiar conclusion.
Another twist posthumous fate of Carroll began with his beloved
heart of mathematics. Almost simultaneously in two different countries, two inquisitive
researcher took, imagine addition and subtraction. Then
discovered that many of the cute little girls at the time of getting acquainted with Carroll has
crossed the line of seventeen, eighteen, twenty or even thirty years ...
How? - Asks the reader incredulous. Surely nobody had ever
bothered to count how many years it was girls? Yes, this is the mysterious
magic of myth. His harmony does not tolerate the brutal interference of the algebra (and even
arithmetic).
It is significant that the immutable, long-established truths
assaying in a sense, outsiders - French professor
(aliens!) H. Lebeyli and not related to science actress (!) Caroline
Leach. (Academic community has not come to the delight of this intervention.) Lebeyli
presented his findings in scientific studies [10], Caroline Leach published a book,
designed for the reader to [11].
The results of the review of known facts and documents preserved
proved devastating. As a house of cards collapsing profound
building and hypothesis ... ( "You are - just a deck of cards!" - Says angry
Alice and wakes up.)
As an example, a well-known actress memories
Isa Bowman (1873-1958), whose fate Charles L. Dodgson took a sincere
participation. (Dodgson also helped her sisters and brother, all of whom played
stage.) Her book "History of Lewis Carroll, told of this Alice in
Wonderland ", released a few months after the biography of Collingwood, in
1899. Alice, she calls herself on the grounds that in 1888 she
had the opportunity to play the famous kerrollovskuyu heroine.
Memoirs Isa, vividly written, with unmistakable love for Carroll,
which she calls "uncle", yet leaves a strange, sugary
flavor - familiar to us all to school "stories about Lenin. Little
girl and a scientist, Professor! What a strange combination! "- She exclaimed, and then
case. Portrait of the eccentric scientist colored with descriptions of games, walks, her long
visits to Christ Church ... In short, the reader does not have to complain
absence of "pictures and conversations. Thus, we find in the memoirs of a very
dramatic description of the quarrel and reconciliation, "the professor and the little girl":

As a child, I often amused himself by drawing caricatures, and one day,
when he [Carroll], wrote letters, I began to do with his sketch of
the back of the envelope. Now I do not remember, looked like the picture - surely it
was a nasty caricature - but suddenly he turned around and saw what I was doing. He
jumped up and blushed terribly, what made me very frightened. Then he grabbed
My ill-fated sketch and tore him to shreds, silently tossed into the fire.
<...> I was then not more than ten or eleven years, but now this
episode stands in front of my eyes, as if it were yesterday ... [12]

So, according to Isa, at the time described her falling out "no more
ten or eleven years old "... But in reality it is much (" Oh, much! "--
said the Queen ...) more. "It is remarkable - a venomous remarks in this
about Caroline Leach - that Ize already turned thirteen, when she
met with Dodgson. By the time he paid for her lessons
acting and took her on vacation, it was about
fourteen to sixteen, the last time she stayed with him at Eastbourne in
age of twenty.
Hypnosis collectively created an image so large that it is another "young
girlfriend "Carroll, Ruth Gemlen, in his memoirs, written in seventy
age, clearly remembers how in 1892, parents were invited to dinner
Carroll a guest in his time Iza - Isa is described as "shy
child twelve years old. "charming and persuasive - commented that
Passage Caroline Leach - but in 1892 had turned Ize
eighteen ... "
In the case of Isa Bowman speech, of course, not a random error. Her
memoirs are full of haunting reminder of the fact that Carroll was "the greatest
other children "- this definition is repeated more than once.
"I think that made everything in my power to show the most
bright side of his nature - Lewis Carroll as a friend of children. <...> I
I hope that my modest contribution will help preserve the memory of the greatest friend
children ... "- Isa wrote, knowing full well that most of the episodes described
refers not to her children age. To explain this persistence
easy. It's one thing to paint idyllic pictures evenings by the fireplace, long
walking hand in hand, travel to the sea, when it comes to "the little girl
and scholar-professor. "Another thing to defy society, telling about
unusual ways that are beyond the scope of generally accepted - on
relations with the ordinary man living on their own, ordinary
rules. The true facts, said Caroline Leach, could
disastrous impact on the reputation Isa - by the time
prosperous actress. It is easy to imagine the conclusions that would come
virtuous Victorians to learn that middle-aged professor paid lessons
music, visits to the dentist and other expenses of a young actress, does not
child. Meanwhile, Isa was not an exception in Carroll's life - either as
"child-friend", nor as nurtured trust. Carroll lot
communicate with children actors [13] and of great help to them. Widely known for many years
Carroll's friendship with the actor's family, Terry - and the most famous of them,
Ellen Terry, in whose performance he has consistently led her friends.
Almost each of the "child-friends" Carroll, whose memoirs are collected in
published in 1989 book "Lewis Carroll: interviews and recollections,
notes that it was an exception, because her friendship with
Carroll did not end with the end of childhood, and continued in the more mature
years. Read one after another, these statements, you start to wonder what
is a rule, from which so many exceptions? Gertrude Atkinson
for example, wrote about it this way: "Many argue that he loved children, only
while they were children, and lost interest in them when they grow up. My
experience was a different kind: we have always remained friends. I think sometimes
misunderstandings arise because many have grown up girls do not like
when they are treated as if they are still ten years. Personally, I do this it
habit has always seemed very nice.
Other "child-friends" became friends with a famous storyteller, already
quite adults. This was Carroll's familiarity with the artist
Gertrude Thomson. Attention Carroll drew a series of drawings under
entitled "Country of fairies, correspondence ensued, followed by a private
acquaintance; Gertrude Thompson was at that time 28 years. For the first time, Thomson and
Lewis Carroll met in the South Kensington Museum - they are easily learned
each other in the crowd despite the fact that he had never seen before.

Seeing his slender figure and clean-shaven, delicate and expressive
face, I said to myself: "Here is Lewis Carroll" - recalls Gertrude Thomson.
- Carroll, who came to the meeting accompanied by two girls
conferred with his companions, strongly came to the artist.

      - As you guessed, it was me?
      - My little friend found you. I told her that he must
meet with the young lady who knows the fairies, and she immediately pointed out to me
you. But I knew you had earlier ...

Gertrude Thompson recalls another episode, clearly
demonstrating the cautious attitude of society towards friendship of this kind:

Once a friend took me to Mr. Dodgson - good woman
very practical cast, all entangled rules of decency.
We [with Carroll] spent the morning in her house, making sketches of her children.
<...> He left before lunch, and when the meal was finished, the hostess
sent the children and sat in front of me with her sewing.
      - I heard the day before yesterday you spent the day in Oxford, in Mr. Dodgson.
      - Yes, and it was a very pleasant day.
      - Such things are not taken ...
      - We both often do what is not accepted.
      - "Mr. Dodgson can not be called ladies' man.
      - Otherwise, he would not be my friend.
      - He - a confirmed bachelor.
      - And I - persuaded single woman, moreover, by age, he fit me in
fathers
A moment she gazed intently at me, then said:
      - I'll tell you what it was. Mr. Dodgson did not think of you as
young lady. You for it soon - an adult child.
      I laughed merrily.
      - I do not mind that he thought I was his great-grandmother, just to
sometimes invited to Oxford!
But I was deeply wounded. Our clean and beautiful friendship was
seemed to be overshadowed by the rude touch [14].

However, Gertrude Thomson, Carroll often worked on portraits of children --
including naked girls. In Victorian England still
sway of the child, inherited from predromantikov and
Romantics - Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge. The image of girls embodied for
Victorians purity and innocence, the beauty of a child's body was perceived as
asexual, divine, images of naked children were quite common
that time.
Carroll was extremely fastidious in all that concerned him little
models. During sessions will certainly present some kind of lady (mother,
aunt, governess, etc), Carroll wrote: "If I could find for their
Photos charming girl in the world and found that it confuses the idea
pose nude, I would have considered it their sacred duty before the Lord, as
be fleeting nor was her shyness and no matter how easy it was to overcome it, immediately
once and for all abandon this venture. "
In June 1881 the first, a year after Carroll left the classes
photography, he decides to destroy the pictures and negatives of nude
girls in order to avoid misinterpretations in the event of his death (he will soon
fifty years - a considerable age at the time). He wrote letters to mothers
their models, asking not whether to send them photos and negatives, and
informing them that otherwise they will be destroyed. Survived all
Several such images.
Generally speaking, Carroll photographed many - children (both girls and
boys), and, of course, and adults: their families, friends, colleagues
Oxford, writers, artists, actors, clergymen, including
bishops and archbishops, public figures, including
Prime Minister (with the majority of whom he knew of Christ Church).
True, he has become famous thanks to photographs of children: from the works
Amateur photographers of the nineteenth century, his children's portraits are the best.
No wonder the famous photo exhibition "The human race, traveled in 1956
year, many countries and traveled to Russia, from his contemporaries was
He presented one [15].
Contrary to popular belief, the circle of acquaintances Carroll was also very
wide and varied and included many men and women of the
ages. Where did such a firm conviction that
famous author of "Alice" to talk exclusively with young girls?
And what is still concealing family? What compelled the brothers, sisters and
nephews exercise such restraint, such caution in dealing with
papers by Lewis Carroll?
Of course, as rightly observes Caroline Leach, "page not
cut themselves. "But what are the different causes can hide behind
cold clicking scissors! Pages are not cut back. Menello and Violet
- At least in part - provided his great relative to the right
privacy [16] - that untranslatable bastion of British soul.
Caroline Leach wrote very passionately about the loss of diaries and letters
Carroll, accusing his family in a willful distortion of the image of the writer, in
desire to conceal from the public "truth" and other grave sin, apparently, it
no doubt that "people have a right to know." Involuntarily
recall the famous letter to Alexander Pushkin PA Vyazemsky with worn
Citation from the constant passage: "The crowd eagerly reads the confession note
etc., because of his meanness happy humiliation high, weaknesses
mighty. At the opening of any meanness, she is delighted. It is small, as we have it
vile as we are! You are lying, scoundrels, and he is small and not as disgusting as you - otherwise.
It begins this famous tirade like this: "Why are you sorry about the loss of notes
Byron? hell with them! Thank God that lost ... "
But back to the surviving notebooks, which still fall into
British Museum, and to discover Caroline Leach and Lebeyli.

Correspondence Carroll sisters clearly implies that some
pages of his biography brought trouble to relatives during the life
writer. The fact that Charles L. Dodgson - Oxford lecturer
clergyman and a gentleman - his life was at odds with "Mrs. Grundy"
that is, speaking in Russian, did not care, "he would speak
Princess Marya Aleksevna. "(" You should not feel intimidated when talking about me
badly - wrote Carroll concerned about gossip younger sister - if on
people speak at all, someone would inevitably say about him bad. ")
His passion for the theater was considered completely inappropriate for
priest (after all, the theater showing and farce, and vaudeville, and burlesque,
Carroll, who greatly appreciated), as well as a love for painting, in particular,
admiration for the paintings depicting nude women and friendship and freedom
communication with the young and not so young ladies, and does not fit into any
what framework.
"Stories about how young women unaccompanied conducted
holidays by the sea with Lewis Carroll, hardly could be moved
respectable Victorian society, which belonged to the majority
readers Collingwood. Not that the audience wanted to hear about the creator
"Alice"! It is easy to understand that the family sought to put an end to Dodgson
gossip, inevitably surrounding such escapades. To tell the truth publicly --
admit in print that Lewis Carroll had dinner, walked, went to sea alone with
young ladies, stayed overnight in the homes of widows and married women, whose
husbands were away, was the same as that assumed in the monk
Dodgson adulterer and seducer! It is simply no good anywhere, "- wrote
Caroline Leach.
The most innocent of all hobbies Carroll, from the standpoint of the Victorian
morality, his enthusiasm seemed to young girls. It is this passion
is appropriate for the storyteller, and raised on the shield Collingwood at first, followed
him and many memoirists and biographers. Who could know that
the next century, everything will fall on its head and lovingly induced
contemporaries "textbook gloss" otoletsya in such risky
form! ..
In the Victorian era as it was believed that up to fourteen years old girl
remains a child and, accordingly, until then is above all earthly things and
sinner.
According to Caroline Leach, these representations "stand for the naive
family attempts to convince the public that all its many friend
were younger than fourteen years of rock. This manipulation is particularly
transparent, when it turns out that even in carefully selected Collingwood
correspondence, almost half cited letters written by girls over
fourteen and a quarter are addressed to the young ladies of eighteen years and older.
The comparison of published fragments of diaries to more
full version, housed in the British Museum (even with the cut
pages or missing volumes), Professor Lebeyli comes to this conclusion:
"It is not interested in moving to a lovely uncle angel guarding against
outsider view elderly Victorian lady, but his tendency to
doubtful, in their view, a performance in which played a lively young
actress, his favorable reviews of paintings depicting naked
women, evidence of such vulgar taste seemed to them truly
scandalous, and they ignore them consistently and methodically, not
knowing, thereby fueling widespread image of
Lewis Carroll as pervert or maniac "[17].
Indeed, how could they assume that, to preserve the Victorian
virtue of his famous relative, would be exposed to much
menacing charges? Great irony worthy Carroll!
Perhaps Carroll himself partly contributed to the confusion. Take
even invented a term "child-friend". In fact, this phrase
indicated not so much on the age (or even the age difference), but on
type of relationship, as usual for Carroll and so little understanding of society --
probably the same today as then. However, the word "child"
and in the XIX century, still retained the echoes of other shades of meaning. Word is
could indicate not only on age but on the nature of relations in
particular, define the difference in age or social status (cf.
taken in the eighteenth century the expression "children and servants"). By the way, not in vain,
apparently, many of his contemporaries mentioned, as Carroll was considerate to the servants,
- Apparently to him were of particular importance with more
weak, dependent, to some extent, more vulnerable - not worth
forget that Carroll found out early in the burden of responsibility for the eight junior
brothers and sisters ...
However, Carroll used the word "child" was, of course, and game
component, has rightly indicated and Caroline Leach, and Professor Lebeyli.
He often used the word "child" in relation to the special women
sex in the age of twenty, thirty or even forty years ...
In 1894, Carroll wrote Mrs. Egerton, invited to dinner at two of its
daughters, sixteen and eighteen years:

One of the major joys of my - a surprisingly happy - life
stems from the attachment of my little friends. Twenty or thirty
years ago, I would say that ten - the ideal age, but now
age of twenty - twenty five years seems to me preferable. Some
of my dear girls, thirty or more: I think that the elderly man
sixty-two years has the right to still take their children [18].

Approximately the same argument is contained in a letter to

twenty-four Gertrude Chetuey, which Carroll calls to visit with
him in Eastbourne. Here's how he justifies the unusual nature of this invitation:

First, if I live until next January, I turned fifty
nine years. If such a thing suggested a man of thirty or forty
years of age, it would be quite another matter. Then would this question be not
could. To me such an idea occurred to only five years ago. Only
indeed accumulated quite a few years, I ventured to invite guests to ten
girl, which was released without the slightest objection. The next year I
prodtla twelve-week guest. A year later, I called a girl
fourteen years, this time waiting for refusal under the pretext that she had
too grown up. To my surprise and delight, her mother agreed. After
, I boldly invited her sister, who had turned eighteen. And
she arrived! Then I visited another eighteen
friend, and now I do not pay attention to age.

According to H. Lebeyli, Carroll's behavior is due primarily to
extreme independence of character, the desire itself, in accordance with
his mind and his conscience, to make decisions and control
situation. He avoided anything that could be imposed upon him. (To an extent
not even wanted to appoint him to the meeting, thus limiting
his freedom.) What may be less binding, less demanding than
communication with "child-friend"?
It continues Lebeyli, Carroll does not shy women. However
being a man of extremely sensitive, Carroll strictly regulates its
communication with the "fair sex": in his youth, he kept away from the girls at
marriageable age, and only to old age begins to show a certain carelessness
about the age of her friends ... Based strictly counted
Carroll reviews of painting and theater Lebeyli concludes
blooming femininity that drew him, in fact much more girlish
immature charm. [19]
In short, the myth lies: the author of tales about the "Alice" was not the way it
accustomed to thinking ...
Myth lying, echoed Professor Caroline Leach. Carroll was not at all
shy, gloomy recluse - on the contrary, sometimes he put in day
a half-dozen visits, he drove in the theater of his countless female friends, never
avoided men and even more so did not feel hatred for the boys, he received
pleasure from life and loved the company of young women ... However, fierce
debunking the old myth, Kerrolayn Leach immediately begins creating a new --
fantastic love story Carroll to Mrs. Liddell. And you can be
confident that the new sensation in the offing. Opportunities weight: a novel
governess, an affair with Mrs. Liddell, a novel with the rector Liddell ...
Maybe it turns out that Carroll liked only boys. Perhaps there
and any suspicious household pet or a beloved corpse. And
This will be partly to blame for the unfortunate Victorian ladies, and lost
Rugged precious volumes of diaries. For there is nothing that excites
imagination, as a mystery. How many years appends for Dickens's last
unfinished novel, how many years agitated tenth, burnt head
"Eugene Onegin"! Probably, and Carroll is still a lot of amazing
metamorphosis ...

But perhaps we shall. Break and look at some. Perhaps we
finally cease to divide in two eyes and we can not see the two antipodes
(a sort of Jekyll and Hyde), and one, a very remarkable man, an unusual
to such an extent that contemporaries and descendants prefer to divide it into
"Carroll" and "Dodgson" and accept "piecemeal". Puzzles and paradoxes
continue to accompany his name - even now, after more than a century after
his death. The beauty is that a riddle is not always the answer: what,
For example, a raven like a desk?
The British know the price of strangeness: at Carroll's home country has its own
cultural niche - an eccentric scientist and a gentleman ", although, of course, and this
only one of the masks. Certainly, it suits him not as an example to better
than mask prissy pedant, who, as noted in his time
Virginia Woolf, "there was no life", or just too ridiculous mask secret
tempter girls ... But if these masks dissolve, disappear, what
left? Smile, of course.
Can we say that Lewis Carroll was a free man? He,
undoubtedly, was deeply religious, but he could not accept the idea of eternal torment;
allowed himself to attend the service in the Orthodox Church and even in
synagogue, said that if he had known church-Slavic language, it would take
participation in Orthodox worship. He respected the traditions and the establishment
society, but openly opposed to those who seemed
pointless or unfair. He gave an extraordinary friendship
full of humor and kindness, many women --
as we now know, of all ages. And at the same time rely on its
proposition is much more than the generally accepted rules. This was a man
conscience, in their thoughts and deeds, he gave a strict account to God. But
never - never! - Do not confuse it with the Lord, Mrs. Grundy, spiritual and
secular authorities. He had an answer before God, rather than before them. And not before
us.

Thank you for the emergence of a succession of myths and their revelations.
"According to some reports, Mr. Dodgson turned to Alice's parents to allow him to ask for her hand when she grow up. However, accurate data on this. It is possible that this part of the" myth of Lewis Carroll and Alice, emerged later. "

Do you know where the "Cheshire cat"? And why he was only a head? So it'll be. There is no such breed Cheshire cat, but at the time Carroll was "Cheshire cheese". Sold it like all cheeses round heads. And so on the label of Cheshire cheese was painted the head of a cat or a cat - a trademark for the company apparently. Cool huh?

Finally, before the crisis there is an art, perhaps a couple of years this art gather momentum and revive the Russian soul: shy:
I want to add.
Crisis clean society in particular and our. Until 1998, the country dominated by bandits, after the business began to dominate, the Russian merchants never experienced great taste. After the crisis of 2008 will dominate the bourgeoisie and the capitalists as well as in all countries of the world. Note that the Communists who destroyed the capitalist system is the most disliked priests and the bourgeoisie. Think poem, "12" Block that saved his life, where he writes about Bourgeois, himself буржуем - son of the landowner and lived on rents from the estate. Later complained that the peasants were sleeping in his estate library:

Bourgeois stands at the crossroads
And in the collar hid his nose.
A number of wool clinging tight
Cowered mangy dog.

It is a bourgeois, like a hungry dog,
It is silent as a question.
And the old world, like dog rootless,
Behind him, cowered.

The hatred of the Communists to bourgeoisie and priests expressed in the fact that they worked and lived richly ie parasites were sitting on the necks of the people. Capitalists are even working.
The bourgeoisie is the soul of the people and only the bourgeois versed in the art and patronized him.
By the way the merchant could never become a gentleman as mired in commerce, the nobles may have factory estate, but do not engage in commerce that is repurchase goods because in the service of the emperor.
