Figure N. Kuzmin - a variant illustrations to Pushkin's "Count Nulin."
Sheet size - 30,6 x20, 8; size in mat - 27,8 x18, 8. Ink, pen and watercolor. Dated (twice), 1957. Autograph in the lower part of the figure is dated 23 December 1958. Destination - Borovaja Tatiana - unknown to me. Figure is in Moscow. Kuzmin Nikolai 1890 Serdobsk, Penza Province. 1987, Moscow In 1909, nineteen-year self-taught from the province dare to send their drawings - a slavish imitation of the then-fashionable Englishman A. Beardsley - a refined magazine Moscow Symbolists "Libra". Figures like Briusov, and printed. Printed vignettes Kuzmin and prim Petersburg "Apollo." Later still a novice artist had to learn seriously, by I. Bilibin at the Drawing School of the OPH (1912-14), at the PA Shillingovsky Vhuteine in Petrograd (1922-24). At the end of 1920. Moscow rallied a group of young artists united by a craving for a living, fast, instantly respond to the experience of life drawing - a group of "13". Kuzmin was one of the organizers. "Draw without amendment, without retouching. Draughtsman that the work, as in the work of an acrobat, feel the pace!" - Explains the artist. On the street sketching this easy manner was transferred to the book. In "Eugene Onegin" by A. Pushkin (1933) Kuzmin hundreds of runaway drawings illustrated the story is not so much how many copyrights retreat on the fly abandoned thoughts of the poet, his lyrical state and forcing the reader a whole new way to perceive familiar novel. Kuzmin illustrates Russian and Western classics ("Actress" by E. de Goncourt, 1933, "Theatre" by A. de Musset, 1934, etc.) and books by contemporary authors, especially fond of the book about the life of Writers - A Pushkin, M. Lermontov, Tolstoy. He is attracted to texts ironic, parodic, "Kozma bars" (1933), "Tartarin of Tarascon" A. Daudet (1935). Freedom to live the fast line Kuzmin has weakened somewhat over the years - perhaps not without influence unwise editors and critics. But he kept in his most recent works irony, subtle link with the spirit and style of the text, rather than solely by the details of the plot. He gladly took up the book, impossible to literally illustrate. In the 1950s. his drawings are like rediscovered readers a story by Nikolai Leskov about Lefty from Tula. Then there were the "Diary of a Madman" by Nikolai Gogol (1958) again, "Kozma bars" (1965), the epigram of Alexander Pushkin (1979) and many more. The same qualities as what attract the drawings Kuzmin - observation and humor, ease and accuracy of the pen - is different and the literary heritage of the master, his memoirs essays and articles about the artists close to him, thinking about art, literature, about illustrations. |
