Born in the village Timashova (Borovsky district, Kaluga Province) March 20 (April 1) 1840 to a family of merchants. Engaged at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MUZHVZ, 1856-1866), in particular in S.K.Zaryanko. Experienced a profound impact V.G.Perova. He was one of the founding members of the "Society of the Wanderers". Sketched in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda. He lived mainly in Moscow.
From his early works, the most famous satirical cartoon in spirit Jokers (Gostiny Dvor in Moscow, 1865, Tretyakov Gallery) - a group of merchants who mocks drunken officer. Over the years, the theme of "humiliated and insulted" gained him even more ostropsihologichesky - on the brink of tragedy - the character: this is his masterpiece empty (1871, Museum of Art, Kharkov, 1872 version - the Tretyakov Gallery), where the figure of a teenage seminarian, zyabnuschego evening in the train on the snowy path, into a grim symbol of social exclusion. Typical "Wanderers", always combined satire and drama with intimate chronicles "bidermeyerovskogo" persuasion, do not pretend to any social class. Among his works - A Cruel Romance (1881), Hunting Forest captivity (1881), saved the day in the North (1887), the artist's studio (1890, all work - in the same), the Common sacrificial cauldron at church festival (1888, Art Museum ANRadischev, Saratov).
He turned to the historical genre, having written several versions of the painting Episode 1812 (version 1874 - the Tretyakov Gallery). In 1871-1871 with V.E.Makovskim created an album Scenes from the life of Sevastopol 1854-1855 Year for the defense of Sevastopol. Successfully worked as a teacher (in MUZHVZ, 1873-1894).
Pryanishnikov died in Moscow.
