The main object of his scientific papers is a colloquial Russian speech in all its manifestations. He was seriously engaged in the study of the history of Russian literary language, historical grammar, lexicology, pronunciation, language, Russian writers, spelling and phraseology.

Since the late 1920s, began work on the preparation of "Dictionary of Russian Language," edited by Dmitry Ushakov, based on which Ozhegov created one of the best known and most popular dictionaries - single-volume "Dictionary of Russian language," which captures the modern vernacular language, demonstrates the compatibility words and idioms typical.

The first edition of "Dictionary of Russian Language" was published in Ozhegova 1949, and the popularity of the dictionary at once began to grow rapidly. From that time until 1991 ozhegovsky dictionary stand 23 publications with a circulation of more than 7 million copies. From edition to edition Ozhegov recycled vocabulary, trying to improve it as a universal guide to the culture of speech. Until the last days of life scientist has worked tirelessly to improve his creation.

Since 1952, Ozhegov - Head of the Department of Culture Institute of the Russian language speech at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
