In early 1900 he studied at a private school, KF Juon, in 1906-1919 - a Leonid Pasternak in MUZHVZ - the second state of free workshops, which finished with a gold medal, awarded for "Portrait of a father."

In 1914 he was conscripted into military service as an officer, until 1918 he fought in the artillery. After demobilization, he returned to Moscow. In 1918-1919 gave private lessons, worked as an assistant R. Falk in Higher Art. Participated in the exhibition "From Impressionism to bespredmetnichestva» (V Public exhibition of paintings, 1918-1919) in Moscow.

In 1919 he emigrated. For some time he lived in Istanbul, where he paintings cabaret and stage design (the opera "Scheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov's repertory for VP Zimin). In 1922 he traveled to Germany and France, studied at art school the Bauhaus in Weimar and participated in the First Russian Art Exhibition in the Van Diemen Gallery in Berlin (1922).

In 1923 he settled in New York. Exhibited work in many group exhibitions, but the first time to no avail. Only in the early 1930's has received recognition and numerous orders. He painted portraits and street scenes, combining elements of primitive and expressionist. Participated in an exhibition of contemporary Russian art in Philadelphia (1932). Designed the Russian club "Troika" in Washington, DC (1932), a nightclub in Baltimore (1934), the restaurant "Petrushka" in New York (1930).

In the 1940's style works Vasiliev has changed: from primitive and expression, he turned to fine arts and planar manner in which he worked until his death. The best works of this period - floral still lifes, interiors and songs with female figures. From 1938 to 1963 held ten solo exhibitions in various New York galleries (Bertha Schaefer "," Chinez "," J. Heller and others). Has received awards at art competitions "La Tusk" (1948) and University of Illinois (1954).
