A master of Russian battle painting. He was born in Odessa. 1865 - 1877 he studied at ORSH, 1877 - 1883 - at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts at J. Brandt. 1889 in the halls of OPH in St. Petersburg held a personal exhibition. He has participated in exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1896, 1898). 1901 received a government order for the creation of panoramas, is dedicated to the 50th anniversary nnoy defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. 14h115 panorama size, 5 m was opened in 1905 in a specially erected for her building. 1903 was appointed professor and head of the Supreme XY battle workshop at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1908 he became an academician in 1910 - a member of the Academy of Arts. Among the students of the artist many famous masters of battle-Soviet period: M. Greeks Avilov M., P. Kotov and others. 1909 - 1912, together with I. Myasoyedov worked to create a panorama of the Battle of Borodino. Many traveled to the Caucasus, South Caucasus, Central Asia, Ukraine. He lived mainly in St. Petersburg, from 1913 - in Munich. Bright representative of academic painting, the master of battle, historical and genre scenes. His works are in the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Museum-Reserve "Borodino field" (Moscow Region), Museum-Panorama "Borodino" (Moscow), the Museum-Panorama "Defense of Sevastopol" (Sevastopol), Penza, Stavropol XM and many museums in Europe.
