From a military family doctor, the village chieftain Uryupinsk. He studied at Don Cadet Corps of the Emperor Alexander III in Novocherkassk (1899-1905), drawing classes in Rostov-on-Don (1907-1908) by A. Chinenova. In 1910 he arrived in Moscow, made friends with the artist SN Pimenov. Attend classes in the studio Korovin in MUZHVZ (1910-1913).

He worked as a sculptor and painter. I created female figures, animalistic sculpture, portraits and still lifes. In December 1911 hosted in Rostov-on-Don, the first solo exhibition, which presented about 50 works, mostly portraits and still lifes. Until 1918 he participated in exhibitions of the Rostov-Nakhichevan-na-Donu Society of Fine Arts, until 1919 - Exhibition "Salon" in Rostov-na-Donu. In 1913 went to Paris, where he met with O. Zadkine, A. Modigliani, J. Sutin and other representatives of the artistic medium.

At the beginning of the First World War enlisted in the 1 st Foreign Regiment, was seriously wounded in the Champagne, was awarded the Military Cross and is aimed at long-term treatment in the Savoy. In late 1917 he returned to Novocherkassk. Member of the Civil War on the side of the green and white. In 1920, with parts of the White Army were evacuated to Constantinople.

In Constantinople, met with the artist LA Nikanorova, later became his wife, and filmmaker V. Tourjansky. Member and exhibitor Ecumenical Union of Russian Artists (1923).

In 1923 as a member of the First World War on the side of France moved to Paris. However Nikanorova, A. Minervin, SN Pimenov completed mural restaurant Caucasian cellar "in Montmartre on the themes of Russian folklore. In 1924, with Pimenov and Tourjansky participated in Corsica in the filming of "a shadow" (directed by A. Volkov). In 1930, held a joint exhibition with his wife in the gallery R. Zivy. Participated in the exhibition of Russian art in the gallery La Renaissance. He was awarded the silver medal of the Society of French Artists (1927), the gold medal of the Salon painters decorators (1928) and the World Exhibition in Paris (1937). Held a solo exhibition in Gallery Chappe Lautier in Toulouse.

In 1938, a widower and lived in Kastelnodari in the south of France. He performed the altar with statues, candlesticks, tabernacle, stained glass for the church in Toulouse (not preserved). In 1942, remarried to the artist J. Astra, a pupil of Maurice Denis, and moved to live in SOREZE (Tarn).

After World War II dealt mainly with painting. He painted scenes of motherhood, harlequins, musicians, still lifes, religious songs, rarely - landscapes. In 1948, received French nationality. From 1952 he lived in the house of his wife in Revel (Department of Haute-Garonne). In the period from 1946 to 1958 held about 20 solo exhibitions in Nice, Carcassonne, Cannes, Montpellier, Toulouse, Paris. Postmortem and retrospective exhibitions of the artist held in Carcassonne (1968), Toulouse (1975, 1992), in the artist's studio in Revel (1980), Castro (1990), Bonifacio (1992).

Works are in many museum collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum d'Orsay in Paris. In the Russian museum collections creativity Artemova hardly represented: some works are in the Rostov Museum of Fine Arts.
