MOSCOW, July 13 - RIA Novosti. Museum of St. Petersburg officials have determined that the unknown author of the portrait of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, who exhibited at the fortress, is the Desert, said on Tuesday the press office of the city's history museum .

Portrait of Grand Duke, the authorship and exact date of the execution of which until recently were regarded as unknown, entered the National Museum of History from the Hermitage in Leningrad in 1969. Currently, the portrait is in the exhibit "The History of St. Petersburg - Petrograd. 1830-1918" at the Commandant's house and Paul Fortress.

"Thanks to the work of attribution research team Petersburg Museum of History and assistance of colleagues from the Hermitage and Russian Museum was established authorship and year of creation of the portrait. Portrait of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich was written in the Desert in October 1885, commissioned by the Secretary of State Alexander III Alexander Polovtseva" - the report said.

Kramskoy in 1870-1880-s created a whole series of portraits of famous people age, among whom was the portrait of the President of the Academy of Arts Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich Romanov. This work is in the late 80-ies of the 19 th century, exhibited at the Wanderers.

After the exhibition the portrait was kept at Polovtseva, and after his death in 1910, descendants passed now to the Imperial Hermitage. In the Soviet years the portrait was removed from the Hermitage collection, transferred to the State Museum Foundation, and then returned to the State Hermitage Museum. In 1969 he transferred to the National History Museum in Leningrad without authorship.
