About the artist:

Evgeny Mikhnov-Voitenko (1932, Kherson — 1988, Leningrad) — legendary artist-abstractionist, the representative of Leningrad non-conformism. He studied at the Scandinavian Department of the Pedagogical Institute of foreign languages (1951-1954), in the workshop of N. Akimova at the Theatre Institute (1954-1958). Worked as a designer at the Leningrad art Fund. The leader of the older generation of the Leningrad underground, was friends with L. Aranzana, A. Knaifel, B. Ponizovsky. In 1956 he became interested in abstract painting under the influence of J. Pollock and William de Kuninga. One of the first to work in an abstract expressionist manner.

Member of the fellowship of experimental fine art (1981). Created the original aesthetics of spontaneous painting, inventing technical possibility of uncontrolled artist image. Used sliding table, changing the angle and consequently the trajectory of the spreading of the paint. Working with wet cardboard, giving unpredictable stains, the paint was sprayed, and then scraped her, leaving only faded traces. Unlike American abstract expressionism, which emerged under the influence of surrealism, psychoanalysis and studies of archaic mythologies, painting mikhnova-Voitenko was formed in the spiritual and religious quest. Is considered one of the most outstanding Russian non-conformist artists of the twentieth century.
