Julia Shapoval - quotation giddily rises

From 11 to 21 September 2008 under the antiquities market in the Paris Biennale Gallery Laurentin be put up about 50 works by the artist of Ukrainian origin Julia Shapoval. This mini-retrospective certainly raise interest in the artist, who died prematurely at the age of 32 years.
Shapoval was born in Kiev in a wealthy Jewish family who emigrated to France in 1924, fleeing from communism as well as of the pogroms. In 1938, after finishing school, he met Picasso. In 1939, he joined the faculty of medicine.
Shortly after the capitulation of France Shapoval abandoned medicine to devote himself to painting, but in July 1942, when began mass arrests of Jews, he was forced to flee from Paris. His mother and one of the sisters were deported to Poland, and he went to Marseilles, where he was attending higher hudozhesvennuyu school.
In 1943 he moved to Toulouse. In the luggage he had a teddy bear, which was hidden capsule of poison in case of arrest. In Toulouse, he met Jeanne Depyuzhol, his future wife.
Returning to Paris in 1944, he learned that his mother and sister died in deportation. Shapoval again met with Picasso and befriended by James Lord. In 1946 he married Jeanne Depyuzhol. They settled in the house number 43 on the Avenue Montaigne, and he began to work and sell their pictures to friends, in particular, art dealers and Pierre Henri Benešov birch.

Career Shapoval lasted only 7 years between 1944 and 1951. And during this period he created some 800 works. It is too short to be able to determine his place among his contemporaries, have gained prominence at the end of the war - Buffet, Soulages, Tal Kata, Pinon, Degotte, Sarsuns and other talented artists.
Shapoval was a wealthy man, so he could afford to work without expectation of immediate success. His move to abstraction influenced by Kandinsky's been gradual, cautious, in parallel, he worked in the cubist style, but at the end of his short life, he returned to figuration.
Unlike many artists who died prematurely - Seurat, van Gogh, Modigliani - a legacy Shapoval not become the subject of intense speculation in the art market. His name has long remained in the shadows, and the legacy he was kept in the family.
