"Gedert Elias - the artist, the interest of which increases with time.
Prolific and diverse, gifted not only a strong and unique talent, but also an outstanding capacity for work, he was an artist who is awarded and respected, even feared - but his personality has always been shrouded in mystery. This is determined not only difficult at times, but his reserve and aloofness. More than a thousand oil paintings, hundreds of paintings in watercolors and pastels, thousands of pictures, articles on various aspects of art - that's creative legacy G.Eliasa which he wrote brilliant pages in the history of Latvian art. Gedert Elias was born September 23, 1887 in the town of Jelgava Zileni Platonskoy parish district. Parents, Janis and Carlin Elias, managed to give his four children work skills, perseverance, independence and accuracy throughout. In addition, the mother handed Gedertu ability to see beauty in the small and in the large. Stable aesthetic foundations laid in the family, helped G.Eliasu live life in harmony with itself. Even when external factors called for compromise. Parents provided a good education for their children. After completing elementary school in Jelgava G.Elias studied in high school "Academia Petrina" (1896-1897), but in 1898 he continued his studies at the Jelgava school with scientific bias. Art teacher Carl Wisner said the boy interested in art and invited him to study painting with his former student - a young and talented artist Janis Walter. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1898 Ya.Valter opened a studio in Jelgava, where in 1902 and enrolled G.Elias. A few years later (1904) he continued his education at the private studio of William Purvita (famous Latvian painter, founder of the Latvian Academy of Art) in Riga. Like his older brother and sister Kristaps Maya G.Elias was involved in the revolutionary movement from a school pores in Jelgava. During the Revolution, from 1905 to 1906., He was particularly active. His studies were interrupted due to the December 22, 1906 G.Elias was arrested for taking part in revolutionary activities. After a while he was released on bail and tried to leave Latvia. Young revolutionaries went to Europe with a forged passport (now it was Ludwig Theodor Leela), and seven years later he returned and learned the artist, with the purchase experience, colleagues awarded him the title of the most educated Latvian artist of his time. According to the available information about the artist and the memoirs of contemporaries, G.Elias from 1908 to 1913. studied at the Brussels Royal Academy of Arts. The Royal Academy of Arts has confirmed that Lila Louis, born in Bershola (Russia) on 11 September 1886, and lived at Braemt 30, Brussels, entered the Academy October 3, 1910, and studied there until 1912. Elias teachers in painting were Dzh.Delvil (1867-1951) and G.Rishir (1866-1942). Elias acquired knowledge not only in the academy - he was a regular visitor to Brussels museums and in the last years of training was often in Paris, where she studied at the time of his sister Maya. He first visited Paris in 1910. Brussels famous sculptures and roses, but in Paris, art was everywhere. There was the Louvre, where the budding artist could see the works of famous painters, who are particularly attracted to it - for example, Rubens, Rembrandt, and other F.Halsa. After studies at the Brussels Royal Academy Gedert Elias went to Paris. There he stayed until April 27, 1913, and studied with ZP Laurent (1838-1921), who taught at the Paris School of Art and the Academy Zhilian (along with his son Paul, Albert?). In the list of students of both institutions can also find the name G.Eliasa. In 1914, the young artist returned to his homeland. Soon after, he wrote a rather unusual picture. Unusual not only because it was one of the few papers signed by his initials and the date indicated, but also because the picture was surprisingly melancholy, full of humor, which was unusual for the artist's works, especially in the early period. In 1916 Gedert Elias went to Moscow, where he lived for a few months until 1917, visiting various museums and exhibitions. In Moscow, he did not find anything unusual - Brussels and Paris with their creative work has given him valuable experience. Although the artist was very critical in his comments against Russian art, it still gave him a new impetus. Likely that under the influence of traditions of the Moscow art changed its color value and color of his paintings, but lines still retain their decorative value. Gedert Elias returned to Latvia in 1917. In 1919, he participated in a group Expressionists. For the first time in Riga, his works were exhibited in 1919 at a retrospective exhibition organized by a group of expressionists. From 7 to 28 March 1920 at the Museum of Art organized the first exhibition of the Riga Artists (former band Expressionists), where 68 papers were presented Gederta Elias. This exhibition is the largest by number of exhibited works of the artist. Most of his life (from 1925 to 1953 with a break during the German occupation) G.Elias worked at the Academy of Arts of Latvia - first as a teacher at the full-scale class, then - as a master in the studio of figurative painting. While working in a full-scale class artist increasingly turned to painting a nude. In 1924, the painting "Seated Woman" was awarded the prize in 1928 for his film "Swimmers in the evening" Cultural Fund has provided scholarships to Elias for a trip abroad. Mr. Elias is the founder of Pastoral in Latvian art. Scenes of everyday life of native Zileni are the most outstanding and reliable image of the Latvian village and its inhabitants in the national art. In his paintings for the first time this issue became so noble, universal and philosophical epic extended character. The artist spoke about life without ideological enthusiasm or sentimental didacticism, for him the nature, people and work hand in hand: the nature is beautiful and primitive power-demanding, people - in a routine waiting to die on their native land, but hard work - just a part of eternal rhythm. Another important activity G.Eliasa was writing articles on various topics of art for periodicals. Notable is his work as head of the Latvian Arts Encyclopedia from 1927 to 1940. His articles on various topics - Christian, primitive, African art, baroque and classicism - can be found in all volumes except the 11th. Of course, he also paid attention to the English, French, Dutch, Belgian and Italian art. In 1940 he published the book "Modern French Painting", co-written with his older brother Kristaps Elias. Reports, essays, speeches, written after the war, were not published, although they play an important role in G.Eliasa as art historian. The most significant and bulk material to a covered are his reports on Giotto (1946/47 academic year), of Giorgione (1948), the technique of painting and art as a teaching tool (1949). Late 40's and early 50's were a very difficult period for G.Eliasa. March 25, 1949, his mother was deported to Siberia. In January 1951, his brother Kristaps was also exiled, the fate of his sister Maya and her family are still unknown. In addition, in 1953 he was forced to leave work at the Academy of Fine Arts. After these difficult experiences he rarely created new paintings, mostly exhibiting works of the past let.Aktivny period in his work came in the 20th - 40th years. In the second half of the fifties G.Elias many pastel drawing - mostly portraits of people seen on the train to Jurmala. These works were not intended for exhibition, and the artist almost did not show them to anyone In the late fifties, Mr. Elias was working on the movie "1905," which has a few options (like oil and pastels). These were the memories of his youth, as well as the dedication to friends and comrades in arms. In the sixties, Mr. Elias also continued to write - he has created some beautiful paintings with which he participated in exhibitions. The artist worked, because I could not otherwise.
