The book gives a complete picture of the historical and cultural situation in Norway and Germany throughout the life of the artist. Particular attention, as befits a biography, given the events of Munch's personal life and their evaluation in the light of his personal qualities. One gets the appearance of a person with a fragile health, intellectual development and delicate kind, but not weak, and unrestrained in his work and confident of his genius creator, despite the constant need. On the basis of correspondence tells about the relationship of Munch and his family, women and friends. The details are set out with patrons, allies and volunteers. Step by step unfolds the creative life of complete lack of understanding during the first two decades of creativity through a huge success in 1910's to the absolute international recognition in the 20's and 30's. Some interesting statistics from the financial area - the prices of sales at the pictures, the amount of income and tax returns. In short, the book Ness covers all the points that art historians largely sidelined from the professional or ethical considerations. The book is not determined by ownership of Munch to one or another direction of art, the consideration of motives and images of paintings is to describe and create stories, although there are small Glaucus, on the portrait, self-portraits and monumental paintings. Opinions about the creative method, limited quotation of letters and conversations with friends Munch. And although the book is not art history perspective, this does not detract from its value as a full-fledged biography. Among its advantages include unobtrusive articulation of a principled position, which in scientific monographs of the second half of XX century remains, as it darkened. Of all the vicissitudes of a difficult fate of the artist, it is clear that the host country is not very Munch complained, and the success and recognition came to him first to Germany and then in Norway and in France, he had not managed to achieve sustained attention to the person. Another merit of Ness is debunking the myth of the reclusive lifestyle of the artist in the last decade in his estate Ekele. Described in the book numerous contacts with friends, exhibition organizers and buyers of travel abroad, show that he actively communicated, protecting themselves through this myth, only from unwanted contacts. Among the shortcomings include a small number of color illustrations, although they are of good quality. Ness The book was translated into Russian and has appeared on sale in late 2007. The last book of Munch (R. Stenersena), not counting the three small albums that came out in the country in 1972. So the appearance of the first full-scale biography of the artist in Russian can be considered a welcome development.
