This is a painting of St.. Jerome with a wrinkled face profound old man with one hand propping up his head, his other hand he placed on the skull, specifically pointing us to him and letting him know that this symbol of the transience of life is the subject of his reflections. Skull intentionally symbolically placed between the open Bible lying on the desk and inkwell. This points to the role of the saint as the translator of the Bible. Old Jerome looks at us with paintings by Durer with an expression of frustration and grief. It is clear that Dürer created this painting under the influence of Flemish art, and especially Quentin Matsys.
