The village of Great Sorochintsy spreads in the valley of the river Psyol, 25 km from the district center - Mirgorod. Name of the village comes from a legend that existed near the Monastery, founded the father of Daniel of the Apostle, in which there were 40 monks. When the monastery destroyed enemies, but the monks were tortured to death, local residents in their honor decided to name the settlement - Soro (k) Chentsov (Chentsov - Ukr. Monks). In official documents of the locality mentioned by name Sorochintsy with the 20-ies of the XVII century. Also used another name, more ancient origin - Krasnopol. Only in the middle of the XIX century the settlement was fixed for the current name - Great Sorochintsy.
In 1648 was established Sorochinskaya hundred Mirgorodskogo Regiment, and at the beginning of XVIII century, the town is the management of this regiment (Colonel Daniel was the Apostle). He was surrounded by an earthen rampart with a wooden towers on the bastions. By the way, Sorochintsy in 1709, withstood the assault of the Swedish forces.
Transfiguration Church in Sorochyntsi erected in the years 1728-1734 hetman of Left-Bank Ukraine Apostle Daniel (1727-1732). She was destined to become a tomb for its founder and his family. Church consecrated the then Metropolitan of Kiev Raphael.
The stone church at first had nine domes, but after the fire due to lightning in 1811, only five have been restored. Architect of the temple, whose walls, by the way, have a half meters thick, was Stepan Kovnir, who built in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Masons were from Poltava and Oposhni, carving an iconostasis executed master of Glukhova and Gadyach and icon artist wrote Mirhorod school Borovikovsky and Fr Alypy of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Remains of Hetman Danylo Apostol, his wife Juliana and four children are in a tomb beneath the temple, but all the moves there are now filled.
