Russia's gold coin issuance in 1755 was sold for a record sum for a British auction. Over rarity 20-ruble denomination unknown collector paid 1.8 million pounds, that is about 2.9 million dollars.

This is the highest price paid at any time in the history of the world market for numismatic coins minted outside the United States. The previous record was set in a Polish coin 200 ducats, which was sold this year for 1.48 million dollars.

The absolute record, according to the "Vestey.ru" belongs to the American gold coin minting in 1933 with a double eagle and the face value of $ 20. More recently it was acquired by a collector for 7.5 million dollars.

Commenting on Russia's record auction house spokesman said that the unprecedented by the standards of the recent past price reflects the renewed interest of investors in rare coins as an object of capital investment in the financial crisis.
