Born in 1881 in Sheffield, England. He died in 1969 in Yunionvile in the province of Ontario. Frederick Varley was an excellent artistic education. He began from 1892 to 1900 he studied painting at the Art College, Sheffield, after which went to the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, where he studied from 1900 to 1902, his friend, the painter Arthur Lizmer, Varley persuaded to move to Canada. In 1912 Varley Lizmera the advice and left England. In Canada, he took a job as an artist - designer. In 1918 he received an order from the Office of the Military Archives of Canada to paint a picture on the war in Europe. In 1926, Varley, who joined at that time to the''Group of Seven,''he began teaching at the School of Decorative - applied art, located in Vancouver. In 1933 he, together with MacDonald opened an art school, which they called''Art College in British Columbia.''Despite the large influx of students wishing to study in it, two years later the school had to close because of the effects of the Great Depression. Varley moved to Ottawa, where he worked as a painter - portraitist.
