Arthur Lizmer
Born in 1885 in Sheffield, England. He died in 1969 in Montreal, Quebec. Lizmer received artistic training in the Sheffield School of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1899 to 1906. And then went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1906 - 1907).. In 1891 Lizmer emigrated to Canada and upon arrival began to look for work commercial artist - illustrator. He got a job as an artist - designer in one of the advertising agency located in Toronto, which was called''Grip Limited''. There he became acquainted with artists John E. G. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, Franz Johnston and Franklin Carmichael. Lizmer returned to England and got married. He persuaded Frederick Varley immigrate to Canada. From 1916 to 1919. Lizmer taught at the Art - Industrial College of the Queen Victoria in Halifax. In 1919 he returned to Toronto, where in the same year was appointed Deputy Director of the Ontario College of Art. Lizmer was a member of the Group of Seven''''. From 1927 to 1938. he directed the educational programs organized for children Art Gallery of Toronto. He performed a series of lectures in several European countries and in the South - African Republic, where he taught from 1936 to 1937. From 1941 to 1967. he led the Montreal art center for children, which operated at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
