At the beginning of the war, in 1915, the artist went to the front as a volunteer, but was soon reformed due to pulmonary disease and depression. In 1917 he went to Switzerland for medical treatment.
Settling in Davos, he radically changed the plot structure of his pictures: there he wrote exclusively scenes of rural life in the mountains - modern life, according to him, filled him with loathing of its shallowness. In 1920-ies. He became a very famous painter: his exhibitions are regularly held, was a consolidated catalog of his work, and in 1928 he was presented at the Venice Biennale.
