I think the ritual of the sale of works of art is still not quite trade rules and the artist has the right to invent any terms of the sale of their works. As an example, an English artist Janet Cardiff has refused to sell their product "Touch" (a wooden table, fairly rugged and scratches, touching which causes the voices and sounds of a bygone life, phone calls, music). She refused to sell the heiress of Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, explained that she does not want her to work pylilos private mansion, and expressed willingness to sell it to the museum or at least a private foundation which supports contemporary arts and able to guarantee that the product will be displayed .. And what do you think the Baroness in the day registered the fund and this work became the foundation stock Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary known by the abbreviation TBA 21.
