Collection of Art "father" of the Gothic novel, declared a wanted man

British art curators announced a campaign to bring the works of art from the collection of the XVIII century writer Horace Walpole (Horace Walpole, there are different options for the transfer of the name in Russian), author of the first Gothic works of literature - the novel "The Castle of Otranto." As writes The Daily Telegraph, show the values from the collection of the writer opened in 2010 in the Victoria and Albert Museum, in addition, its doors open to the public for the first time the estate Walpole Stroberri Hill.
Total in neo-Gothic mansion Walpole kept about 10 thousand objects, from paintings by Reynolds and Van Dyck to the gloves of King James I and the lock of the hair of Queen Mary I Tudor. About half of them are now in museums and from private collectors, and the location of the second half of the unknown. Among the values declared in the search - bejeweled dagger of Henry VIII, a bust of wife of the artist Nicolas Poussin's work, François Duquesnoy and Roman sculpture of the Emperor Vespasian, who belonged to his father Sir Robert Walpole, first Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Walpole built Stroberri Hill as their summer residence, but considered the possibility of turning it into a "temple of art. Subjects remained in the mansion after the death of Walpole in 1797, but many of them were sold to the heirs of the writer in 1842 during the 24-day auction. About searching for and buying fund collections will be announced through the newspaper The Art Newspaper. The exhibition organizers believe that many current owners of works of art may not be aware of their origin.
