Recall Gogol monument by sculptor Nicholas Tomsk, which was installed on the grave instead of "Golgotha" in 1952, be postponed "to a place of honor" in a branch of the Historical Museum, located at the Novodevichy cemetery.
Originally, the tomb of the writer was at the cemetery Danilov Monastery. There was a bronze Orthodox cross, standing on the black headstone, Golgotha, and the words "bitter words my laugh" (quote from the book of the prophet Jeremiah, 20, 8). A year after in 1930, Danilov monastery was closed, dismantled the cemetery, the remains of the writer moved to the Novodevichy cemetery, along with "Golgotha".
