read the reviews of contemporary exhibitions of the first quarter of the 20 th century on Russian Avant-Garde, no enthusiasm, no epoch-making and crowds of people. Most were skeptical of the "scribble". Including the critics. None of the titans when life is not considered.
And a hundred years ago it was. A striking example - it Izdebski.
Vladimir Izdebski was born in Kiev, May 22, 1882 (old style). He had aristocratic Polish roots from his father's parents, so the family had participated in the uprising against the king's powers, was in exile in Ukraine. Izdebski began to study sculpture with a private teacher, a boy, attended a private art school in Odessa, and in 1897, he became a student of the sculptor of the Society of Fine Arts in Odessa and had in 1898 participated in a student exhibition two sculptures, "Solon" and "Cupid."
Diploma from the school, he received in 1904, however, the Odessa school was committed mostly Wanderers. Because of the contemporary art Izdebski was in Munich, where former Russian students, Kandinsky, and Yavlensky Verevkina were part of the artistic life of the city.
Working in 1905-1909 in Munich, Izdebski friends with Kandinsky's circle and became one of the founders of the New Society of Artists. At first he had the idea to present the Odessa public last art movement that began to apply some of the Russian artists of the time, but gradually his plans were transformed into an international exhibition. Swing it was unprecedented in Russia and especially in Odessa. The inclusion of the latest artistic trends were such a novelty then, that during the period of preparation of the exhibition, local newspapers had the audience in a state of waiting for each new information.
The exhibition was open from December 1909 to January 1910. It was shown more than 700 works of one hundred and fifty artists from the Realist and Impressionist up Fauves and Cubists. Russian artists to appear separately from the European. Among the latter were the French artists of the Parisian school, members of the German Munich group "New Art Association, a few Italians and other nationalities. Display of exhibits accompanied the lecture, explaining the foundations of modern art, literature, music, concerts were given to contemporary music. Then the exhibition moved to Riga, Kiev, and then to St. Petersburg. Alexander Benois Salon Izdebsky welcomed the opportunity to first see the newest trends of Western and Russian art. Opponents of the Salon (among them - Ilya Repin) have been set up so fiercely that organized public scandals. At the first salon at Izdebsky conflict with Kostandi (they even found out the relationship after the incident through the newspapers).
No less significant was and Exhibition 2 nd Salon (Odessa - Nikolaev - Kherson), which opened seven months after the closing of the first. The exhibition shows 440 works by artists from Russia and Germany (Munich), and about sixty works by Wassily Kandinsky. (In fact Izdebski and opened to the public by Kandinsky). This salon was emphasized mainly the existence of new ideas of Russian artists, coming from Paris, Munich or Russia itself.
