1842, 14/26 October, was born in Cherepovets, Novgorod province in the family of the district marshal of the nobility.

1850-1859 studying at the Alexander juvenile case in Tsarskoe Selo, and in the Sea Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg (from 1853).

1858-1859 Attends classes for volnoprihodyaschih the Drawing School of the St. Petersburg Society for the Encouragement of Artists.

1860 Completes Sea Cadet Corps with the rank of midshipman fleet voluntarily retiring. Entered the Academy of Fine Arts. (Leaves it in 1863, formal number there until 1865.)

1863-1864 At the invitation of LF Lagorio travels to the Caucasus in the Georgian Military Highway. Lives in Tbilisi.

1864 arrives in Paris, entered the Academy of Arts (Ecole des Beaux-arts) in the workshop J. Jerome.

1865 Second trip to the Caucasus, visited the city of Georgia and Armenia.

1865-1867 Resumes in Paris classes in the studio Jerome, on the advice of artist A. Vida.

1866 exhibited at the Paris Salon. Summer goes to the estate of the parents Lyubets River Sheksna and in Tver province on the Volga, where he worked on the painting "Barge Haulers" (not implemented).

Detected in 1867 for service in the rank of lieutenant at the disposal of the Turkestan governor-general and commander of the Turkestan Military District, General KP Kaufman.

1867-1868 First trip to Turkestan. Lives in Tashkent, maintains ethnographic research in the Syr-Darya and Semirechensk areas. Participates in the defense of the fortress of Samarkand (2-8 June 1868), for which he was awarded the Order of St. George 4-th degree. Autumn 1868 returned to St. Petersburg, and from there went to Paris.

1869 Participates in the organization of Turkestan exhibition in St. Petersburg, exhibits paintings, sketches and drawings made in Turkestan.

1869-1870 Second trip to Turkestan. Substantiates in Tashkent, visited Samarkand. Travels on Se-mirechenskoy area and along the Chinese border. In October 1870 back through Siberia to St. Petersburg.

1870 Gets the three-year trip abroad for the publication "Album of paintings of Turkestan" (published in St. Petersburg in 1874 under the name "Turkestan. Etudes from nature VV Vereshchagin).

1871-1873 Lives in Munich. Works on paintings and sketches on the materials brought back from Turkestan.

1871 Marries Elizabeth Mary Fisher, in a marriage - Elizabeth Kondratiev-on Vereshchagin.

1872 Participates in the Russian art department at the World Exhibition in London. In Munich, met with PM Tretyakov.

1873 First solo exhibition in London. In the summer taking part in the World Exhibition in Vienna.

1874 at his own request was dismissed from the service. In St. Petersburg, met with VV Stasov. Personal exhibitions in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Turkestan series (13 paintings, 81 sketch, figure 133) purchased by PM Tretyakov. Awarded by the Academy of Arts, the title of professor "for fame and special works on the artistic field, from which publicly rejects.

1874-1876 undertakes with EK Verescagino first trip to India. He lives in Bombay, visited Madras, Agra, Delhi, Jaipur.
Commits the three-month journey to the eastern Himalayas, in the area, the border with Tibet, Kashmir and Ladakh. In the spring of 1876 returned to Munich.

1876-1877 settled in Paris. Working on two series of paintings on the materials brought from India.

Participates in the 1877-1878 Russian-Turkish war. In June of 1877 seriously injured in August, returned to active duty, is the detachment of General MD Skobelev during the third assault on Plevna, involved in the fighting near the village of Shipka Pass Sheinovo, together with a detachment of General AP Strukova participates in the capture of Adrianople.

1881-1882 Solo exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Brussels, Budapest.

1882-1883 Second journey to India. Works in Mumbai, Agra, Darjeeling. Returned to Paris.

1883 Personal exhibitions in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Sale of paintings of the Balkan series; central painting purchased by PM Tretyakov.

1883-1885 undertakes with EK Verescagino trip to Syria and Palestine. Works on a series of pictures of Palestinian. Begin work on "trilogy executions" (completed in 1887).

1885-1887 Solo exhibitions in Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, Frankfurt, Prague, Breslau, Leipzig, Konigsberg, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, London, Liverpool.

1886 Publishes article in Paris, "The progress in the arts.

1887 starts to work on a series of "1812" (completed in 1900).

1888 Travels to Yaroslavl, Rostov, Kostroma, Makarov. Begin work on a series of portraits "nezamechatelnyh Russian people" (completed in 1895). Goes to the United States. Personal exhibition in New York.

1889-1891 Solo exhibitions in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Luis and other U.S. cities.

1890 divorce from EK Vereshchagin. Marries Lydia Vasilyevna Andrew.

1891 settled in Moscow. Second trip to the United States. Sale in New York on the works of Indian, Balkan, the Palestinian series, and "Trilogy of executions. Publishes the New York article "Realism".

1894 trip to Vologda. Travels with his family on the barge on the Northern Dvina, visit Solovetsky monastery.

1894-1895 published literary works: "The war in Asia and Europe. 1902 goes to the U.S., lives in Chicago. Undertake two trips to Cuba. In Washington, working on the painting "The Capture of Roosevelt St. Zhuanskih heights. Personal exhibitions in Chicago, Washington, San Luis, New York. Sale of paintings on exhibition in New York. 20 paintings from the series "1812" purchased by the Government to the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III (later moved to Moscow in Russia Historical Museum).

1903 made a trip to Japan. Works in Tokyo and Nikko.

1904, February 28 following the announcement of the Russian-Japanese war, leaving the army in the Far East.

1904, March 31 (April 13) was killed at Port Arthur in the explosion of the flagship battleship "Petropavlovsk".
