He taught German at the University of Kiev (1956 - 1959), headed the department of criticism in the magazine Foreign Literature "Vsesvit" (1959 - 1960), was dean of the Philology of Kiev University (1960 - 1961). Since 1961 Zatonskii works at the Institute of Literature im.Shevchenko, where he founded the department of foreign literature.

In a speech to the 80 th anniversary Zatonsky FRG Ambassador to Ukraine Dietmar Studemann said: "Dmitry Zatonsky - our best ambassador, he represents many generations of well-known German writers in Ukraine.
