"Slyunyavki, tubes and icons
question: How did this collection?
Answer: I have had several major collections, but the idea and principle has always been the same: to collect what unfashionable. Once an elderly collector told me: "It is easy to go to the store and buy a stamp collection." He collected stamps - and why I went and bought it. So I do the same.
My first collection was formed in France, when I was about 20 years - since 1976, I first had not lived in the USSR. Came upon a flea market at the beautiful icon of gold, silver and enamel with a double-headed eagle. It turns out that this regimental badges signs of Russian officers. I have collected more than a thousand of such signs. From the collections still have the officers' slyunyavki ": when the regiment was awarded, the officers were hanging such things on his chest. There "slyunyavka" emperor ... Then there was the collection of opium pipes, imported to Europe by French legionnaires. Collected 500 pieces, then came the film "Once in America, and in the 80's I bought them.
in: How much?
about
: Millions of dollars and a half, and the whole collection cost me thousands to a hundred. And regimental marks left at Sotheby's three years ago for some phenomenal money: in the hall were already some Russian.
This was followed by a collection of Tibetan icons of XIV - XVI centuries. And moved in 1992 to Russia, I watched with interest that was sold by antique dealers and was associated with the history of the country. Nobody was interested in even porcelain Soviet - this was considered a middle.
Q: And you have gathered a collection of porcelain ...

on: 4 000 subjects. Along the way collecting carpets, furniture, paintings, cigarette cases. And somehow drifted in Saratov, saw in an antique shop Palekh box. Showing two stump enclosed by a string, followed by men in black coats. And the title: "Stumps, on which he worked and rested Lenin, when hiding in Razliv. I immediately bought it - for 30 dollars. In France, stumbled on another box, with an icon: the Nile, with a red flag in one hand, and the second cuts the ore. Dragged her to the Museum of Applied Arts at the delegate. I say: "In the 1920's did such things on revolutionary themes. We are not interested." - "Why?" - "Well, as you say. They're all shot."
in: Palekh artists?
A: Yes. After the revolution in the village of Palekh, specializing primarily in the icons actually Palekh letter dying, artists drank and painted portraits for the village council. In 1924, here comes somebody Hanecki - the one that carried Lenin in a sealed train: "Will you big order - write a revolutionary icon, which will be praying the whole bourgeois world." A month later, orders started to arrive. In Palekh was taken to foreigners - to show how degenerated painters. And artists flourished: freed from the canons, have departed from the Life.
And in the late 1930's article appeared - "a mockery of the revolution" in "Pravda", "Humiliation of the saints" in the "Izvestia". By that time, some artists, not bad, by the way, earn, drank themselves. Others were sent to the gulag or the wall.
Court of the pioneers of the Baba Yaga
Q: But not in one Palekh lacquer miniature existed - were Fedoskino, Holuy, Mstera.
A: Mstera before 1937 drew only the florets. A fedoskintsy were good copyist: transferred to the boxes and panels famous paintings in dozens, hundreds of copies. While in Palekh, we always have one copy. One of my first purchases - a panel "The Court of the pioneers of Baba Yaga." 1935. Sits Baba Yaga, her guard two vertuhaya, the top is written: "evict evil spirits from the earth working-class children living ...
Q: And how many things in the collection today?
on: More than fifteen hundred. Many brought from abroad. In 1930 all were driven to export along with the dolls. Per cent 20 found here. How is the art of mark? Here was born a great word "agitlak. And the idea to publish a book. Its author - an art historian Eugenia Hershkowitz persuaded me to make a cheap version of the publication, which can be for any imputed money selling. Cost of the book - about 300 euros, with trading cheat even more. But the entire edition I want to give fund assistance to children suffering from polio. Someone wants to buy - will be able to send money to the fund.
Q: Are there among the miniatures favorite?
about: I like very much "free love" - girls who go to the demonstration. And "Soviet bees commune labor." "Bees" - a movement in favor of free love, organized by Alexandra Kollontai. Or wallet "Duniasha rural correspondent. Read the caption: "After the change in the hot noon in the river swim, /at the meeting in the club" Shakhtar "/spore was going." 1925, painting crazy, pure avant-garde: nobody had never thought of combining the icon of the revolution. Look at the demonstration: the Jews, who follow Christ, as they represented Palekh artist. And clothes are the same.
Invitation to a Funeral
Q: I have a wonderful desktop device with a lamp, the absolute art deco.
A: In the museum at the delegate this device brought in the late 1980's - like $ 50-60. Tam said: boring. To me he was three years ago has over 10 thousand dollars, for the things of this level too cheap ... But, look, a box, and in it - an invitation:
in: At the funeral of Kirov.
about: And on the cover - Kaganovich's coffin. Or gift Vyshinsky - a frame with photographs of the country's top prosecutors. 1937 - imagine how much blood on them? Could I let it slip?
in: Do not you think that the former Bogomazov just had a sense of humor?
A: No. In the book there are a couple of things for which people and then killed. For example, a frame with a photograph of Trotsky: "bond between town and country", 1925. But for that shot half-artel: the sun in the form of a five-pointed star in the center - the hammer and sickle. The same had to come up! He wrote a wonderful artist Bazhenov. Or his own: "The Soviet Union - the bulwark of peace," on anti-fascist theme, 1935: a fascist is at Calvary. The three would go to jail, including Bazhenova - he died in the camp.
Q: But you are here and things 1960.
A: In most official gifts. When Cuba went to the Soviet delegation, Palekh ordered as presents. So, please, vase with a portrait of Fidel and panels. But something they're confused, portraying Cuban beauty, and pririsoval minaret. Gift rejected.
in: Funny. What you will now be with all this do?
about: selling all of this I certainly do not want to. But lurking, too. I want to open people's eyes, tell them: "You lived next door - and not seen." This is our art - forgotten, original, no one has borrowed. He must show. Americans have already asked about the exhibition at the Library of Congress in Washington. The French were invited to the Grand Palais. The Germans called the Museum of lacquer miniatures in Munster. In Russia, until the silence.
