In modern Western auctions periodically appeared the picture of "Russian school of painting" of the late 19 th century with a mysterious signature: «WACHRENOW» (Cyrillic).

One can assume that this is Vasily Vahrenov (25.07.1847 - the c. 1885), an Odessa artist, painter, landscape painter.
Bibliographic information about him very little: a peasant from the province of Vladimir, lived in the 70 years of XIX century in Odessa and was a painter at the Odessa Society of antiquity and history. In the archives found mention of the fact that Count Stroganov AG petitioned for the release of VV Vahrenova from military service, on the instructions of the same graph the artist creates a unique series of prints "60 species of Odessa, the artist worked on more as a photographer, trying to show in excruciating detail City.
The album was released in 1869 - early 70-ies in Odessa, and since then has never been reissued.
Painting of the artist created, most likely under orders of local landowners, the German colonists, merchants and rich citizens. The artist actively cooperated in local periodicals "Odessa Gazette" and "Odessa sheet. Here he made sketches on the themes of Jewish pogroms in Odessa in 1881.
