Guidebooks scare malaria, mines and snakes, as well as hotels for 1-2 dollars per night. Do not believe the guide!
All have long changed. If you observe safety precautions and do not look for adventures in your local Hurst "masseuses", that civilization had long since there is complete. Good hotel, decent food, the people - a super-good (especially for one dollar). Taxi to the day with an English speaking guide-driver-bodyguard 20-25 dollars (Toyota air-conditioned, medium quality). Water should be drunk (and brush your teeth) as well as throughout Asia - the only bottled.
As I already wrote, the hotel is 4 * ($ 70 per double room) I liked the order of magnitude greater than the Hyatt in Egypt. Here there is worse and more likely to be poisoned at the buffet.
I was the only problem there - after acclimation of winter and with a large difference in time.
