По умолчанию Masterpieces are not sold

Let is expensive, though.
Someone has already said many times that in our non-military time masterpieces are not sold. What museum would sell out their collections of Vermeer, Van Gogh or Rembrandt? They sold after the Revolution, during the war, just robbed ..
In our time, are sold at auctions or on the weaknesses of the recognized masters of old, or new models of new producers.
Or do we recognize one of the "Sunflowers" Van Gogh's most powerful work of this master? Because it is the most expensive he sold?
But Rothko's "cooler" Van Gogh? Well, judging by the numbers ....
Sorry for the painfully familiar examples - so my approach will be clearer.
I'm just interested in at least one American who does not sell.
The artist, who determine the price of the catalog can not.
