In early August, tensions between the Georgian security forces and the separatist region of South Ossetia erupted full-scale military conflict. The region declared its independence in 1989, and since then its status remains controversial. Many residents of South Ossetia is ethnically Russian, and independence from Georgia involves the establishment of stronger ties with Russia. In March 2008, the first Russia's state Duma appealed to the Kremlin with a proposal to recognize the independence of South Ossetia. After the bitterness of the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia in August, Russia's troops occupied Georgian lands bordering with South Ossetia.
