Nikolai Ivanovich Kulbin (1868-1917) was born in Helsingfors (Helsinki). In 1895 he defended his thesis for a doctorate in medicine in 1905-1917 served as assistant professor of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. In parallel with the service Kulbin participated actively in the artistic life of St. Petersburg. A talented artist and futurist, who had no formal art education, a staunch advocate of new art, who worked near the NN Evreinov, Vsevolod Meyerhold, AE Kruchenykh, Kandinsky and many other figures of avant-garde movement in the short period was one of the leaders of St. Petersburg avant-garde end of the 1900's - 1910-ies. In 1908 he created the group "Triangle" and opened the exhibition "Modern trends in art, a coalition of artists in different directions. A number of joint exhibitions, debates, speeches, held on the initiative of Kulbin contributed to the convergence of advanced artistic youth and largely determined the course of development of Russian avant-garde art.
Almanac "Sagittarius". Cover Kulbin works were exhibited in many exhibitions in Russia and abroad: "The Knave of Diamonds" (1912, Moscow, 1914, St. Petersburg), Autumn Salon (1913, Paris), the First German Autumn Salon (1913, Berlin), Independent Beauty (1914, Paris), the International Exhibition of Futurist (1914, Rome) and others of the artist's first solo exhibition was opened in St. Petersburg in 1912. The following took place in 1918 in the Art Bureau Dobychina after the death of the master.
