From a merchant family. In 1892-1893, he studied at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture. He lived in Moscow and Paris (1921). Worked in the field of art and design history and art albums, anniversary and gift books, wall and table calendars and others; occasionally turned to illustrating books for children. Gained fame as an artist book, the author greeting cards and postcards and an outstanding painter. Since 1898 collaborated with publishers I. D. Sytin, A. I. Mamontov, I. N. Knebel, A. F. Marx, A. A. Tolstoy's "War and peace" (1912), gift edition of the Chronicle and facial Izbornik of the Romanov dynasty" (ed. 1913), "Moscow" (ed. 1914), "Ancient Rus in Proverbs and sayings" Century of Volzhanin (ed. 1917 and 1919) and others To the same period belongs a number of works in the field of children's books: "the Tale of the Golden Cockerel" by A. S. Pushkin (ed. 1903, design and illustration); illustrations to fairy tales "Comrades" A. Remizov, "Christmas Santa" and "the witch and the strawberry" V. A. Smirnov (all three). 1917). In 1921 the artist left Russia and settled in Paris. In exile he continued to work on the decoration and illustration of books, mainly for publishing "via": "Moscow and the village in engravings and lithographs, K. of Lukomsky, "Confession" M. A. Bakunin (both ed. 1921), "a Poem by A. de Musset (ed. 1927) and others In 1925 in the same publishing house published the book "the Golden Cockerel and other tales" by A. S. Pushkin, in the illustrations and design of which the artist, in contrast to publications 1903, appealed to the traditions of medieval book art, turning each of the twenty illustrations in exquisite multicolor ornament. The top creative z became the book "Boris Godunov" by A. S. Pushkin (ed. 1927), which is a masterpiece of ornamental art. One of the last works of the artist were illustrations translated them into French fairy tales "snow maiden", "Vasilisa the Beautiful", "Marya Morevna" and "the Firebird", accompanying stylized handwriting (the publication was carried out after the artist's death only in 1978). Also known as the author of the unique design of the "Declaration of the local Council on the restoration of the Patriarchate" and "Message of his Holiness Patriarch Tikhon, the heads of the Christian churches" (1917).
