From 1856 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1861 was awarded a small silver medal for drawing from nature . In 1862 he graduated from the course with the title neklassnogo (free ), painter. Participated in academic exhibitions. In 1864 , for the painting "Sunday leisure " and " Kanareechka kind , though you comforted me," was awarded the title of class artist of the third degree. In 1868-1874 he was attached to the mosaic department IAH. In 1869 elected an academician of genre painting for painting " Young Mother ", " The Village seamstress ", " Children's breakfast ", " Two of the enemy" , "Village Pestun ." Exhibited his works at the World Exhibition in London (1872) and Paris (1878), All-Russian Exhibition in Moscow (1882). In 1872 participated in the exhibition TPHV .
In 1874-1884 served as the artist with the governor-general Vilna , Kovno and Grodno , and then again from 1884 worked on the mosaic department of the Academy . Was attracted to decorating Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg , participated in the creation of the song " The Last Supper ", " Christ Carrying the Cross ", " Luke ", " Mark the Evangelist ", " The Apostle Peter ."
