- theater artist. Honored Artist of Georgia (1943), People's Artist of RSFSR (1957), People's Artist of Georgia (1958). People's Artist of the USSR (1976). Corresponding Member of USSR Academy of Arts (1958). Member of USSR Academy of Arts (1975). Winner of USSR State Prize (1949, 1951, 1977).
He studied at the Art Academy Tiflis (1926-1927 gg.) Y I. Charlemagne. In 1928 he moved to Moscow, where he continued his education in Vhuteine - Higher Art and Technical Institute (teachers Isaac Rabinowitz and Pyotr Konchalovsky). Completed his studies in 1931 in Leningrad Vhuteine (since 1930 - Leningrad Academy of Arts, and teacher Michael Bobyshev).
From 1937 he worked in the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Kirov (now Mariinsky). In 1945 - 62 years. was the chief artist of the theater.
In the theater, the Kirov began to take shape his creative alliance with the Yuri Grigorovich,
