The British built a new museum of modern art in Istanbul
Istanbul is a new museum of modern art Koç Contemporary, which will open the Vehbi Koç Foundation, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Competition to design the museum building has won the British architectural firm Grimshaw, writes ArtDaily.
The museum will exhibit a collection of contemporary art fund Koç Foundation, which includes work as a Turkish authors and foreign. In the collection of the fund, in particular, there are works by Russian artists - Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Olga Chernysheva.
The Foundation began work in the field of contemporary art in 2007. How to find the founders of the museum, the task of the institutions - to make available a collection of the fund, as well as the integration of existing work in the context of world and Turkish art scene.
The new museum will be located in the European part of the Beyoglu district of Istanbul. It is expected to open in 2016 and will be a tourist attraction not only for the collection, but also in appearance.
Grimshaw Architects was founded in London in 1980 by architect Nicholas Grimshaw, who since 2004 has headed the Royal Academy of Arts. His office designed the Waterloo train station in London, the National Space Centre in Leicester, UK (2001). Bureau Grimshaw also known project "Eden" in Cornwall, which is a greenhouse of several geodesic domes. The company is also working on a new terminal at St. Petersburg airport "Pulkovo".
Vehbi Koc (1901-1996) was one of the richest people in Turkey. He founded the country's largest group of companies Koç Holding, which includes the automaker, the bank, the manufacturer of household electrical appliances, the hotel chain, the distributor of fuel and lubricants, the oil company, a supermarket and other businesses. At the beginning of 2013 the turnover of the holding amounted to 47.1 billion dollars. Koç Holding was the first company to open a private museum in Turkey - Sadberk Hanım, which stores archaeological artifacts, textiles and silver.
In Istanbul there are several museums of modern art. The largest of these - Istanbul Modern - opened in 2004.
