Yes, the Stein money came from the cable cars ( Трамвай в Сан Франциско, которыми Стайны владели), but then they sold it. You cannot live in Paris and want to be successful in another country, even then. When Michael and Sarah Stein returned from Paris the second time, it was right after the Depression, life was not very good, but you are right, they were quite privileged, however, their grandson was neither interested in art, more in drugs, horse race betting and motorcycles. Sarah sold one of the famous Matisse paintings to Elise Haas to get money for her grandson, Elise Haas in the 1990's donated it to SFMOMA and died at the end of 2000.

The Steins were among the Americans who loaned Matisse's work to the 1913 Armory Show, two examples that provided the largest public in America with its first close look at a notorious modernist.[10] In 1914, the Steins agreed to lend nineteen of their finest canvases to Berlin, for an exhibition in Fritz Gurlitt’s Gallery. World War I blocked their works in Germany and they were never recovered.[5] Later, in 1925, the couple bought the panoramic Tea (1919), giving it a central spot in their Palo Alto home after 1935.
