Elisha (Prophet)
Jewish prophet Elisha (Hebrew אֱלִישַׁע (Elisha)) - the son of Safat (3Tsar.19: 16) - a wealthy plowman. At the call of Elijah became his first assistant (3Tsar.19 21) per year reign of Jehu, and then after the death of his teacher independent prophet (4Tsar.2: 15).
Elisha recognized authority Jehoshaphat king of Judah, who consulted with the prophet before the campaign against moavityanskogo King Mesha (4Tsar.3: 12).
Becoming an ardent follower of his mentor, Elijah, Elisha prophesied for over 65 years, under six kings of Israel (from Ahab to Joash), and fearlessly spoke the truth, exposing their wickedness and tendency to idolatry.
Elisha died in a good old age, at the age of 100 years, he made the prophetic ministry during the reign of Ahab (3 Kings 19:19) - about 900 BC, and died during the reign of Joash, in the thirties of the IX. BC (about 835).
His name is associated many wonders - from the miraculous transition Jordan to heal the sick, and the resurrection of his wife, son hospitable Shunammite. It also famous for its miracles are: multiplication of oil, at the request of the widow (4Tsar.4 :1-6), the multiplication of bread firstfruits (4Tsar.4 :42-44), the healing of Naaman the Syrian commander (4Tsar.5 :1-19).
On the other hand, Elisha had a violent temper. So, he cursed the little children just for the fact that they mocked him, saying to him, "Go up, thou bald head; Go up, thou bald head "(4Tsar.2 :23-24). As he cursed, "came two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children are" (4Tsar.2: 24).
All the stories of Elisha, he is portrayed as a deeply insightful, strong spirit and faith. By his time, is the highest development of a long-standing institution, known as the "prophetic hosts" or schools - a kind of movable religious and educational communities in which young people are brought up under the guidance of seasoned experience and already famous for embracing the prophets. Elisha was the only eyewitness to the ascension of Elijah to heaven, and to inherit from him received mantle (cloak) as a visible sign of the succession of the prophetic spirit. Elisha's name was very popular in the subsequent literature. About him with the highest praise Jesus Sirach says, pointing to the way it, expressing the truth, not in awe of kings (Sir.48 :12-14).
His name is also mentioned in the New Testament (Lk.4: 27).
